REAL. RAW. UNFILTERED.
This is probably going to make some people uncomfortable.
That’s okay.
Growth usually does.
I think one of the biggest problems in relationships today is that men and women are often speaking two completely different emotional languages.
We’re having the same conversation…
But we’re hearing two different things.
A man may think…
“I’m providing.”
A woman may hear…
“You’re reminding me that I can lose everything if I don’t make you happy.”
A man may say…
“I pay all the bills.”
What he may mean is,
“I’ve worked hard, I’m stressed, and I need my sacrifices to be seen.”
But what many women hear is,
“This isn’t our home… it’s yours. My security depends on your mood. If I disappoint you, I could lose everything.”
Those are two completely different conversations.
Then add another layer.
Every disagreement becomes…
“Remember what you did?”
“Remember your past?”
“Remember how you hurt me?”
“You’ll never change.”
“You’ll always be that person.”
Eventually, accountability stops feeling like accountability.
It starts feeling like a prison sentence.
And here’s what people don’t always understand.
The human brain isn’t designed to live in survival mode forever.
When someone is constantly reminded of their failures…
Constantly threatened with losing their home…
Constantly made to feel like they’re one argument away from being thrown out…
Constantly told they’ll never be enough…
The nervous system begins responding as if danger is always present.
You don’t just “get over it.”
Your body remembers.
Your brain remembers.
Your heart remembers.
You stop sleeping.
Or when you finally fall asleep…
You wake up exhausted because your mind never truly rested.
You replay conversations over and over.
You rehearse arguments that haven’t even happened yet.
You overthink every word before speaking.
You lose focus at work.
Simple tasks become overwhelming.
Your patience gets shorter.
You forget things.
You struggle to be emotionally present for your children because your mind is busy trying to survive the next emotional storm.
You smile on the outside…
While quietly falling apart on the inside.
And if you’ve already survived an emotionally abusive relationship before…
If you’ve experienced trauma…
If you live with Complex PTSD…
Your brain may interpret repeated threats, constant criticism, or daily reminders of your past as signs that you’re no longer emotionally safe. That doesn’t mean everyone with C-PTSD experiences the same symptoms, but for many people, those experiences can intensify anxiety, hypervigilance, sleep problems, and emotional exhaustion.
People often ask,
“Why are you always anxious?”
“Why are you always tired?”
“Why can’t you focus?”
Because surviving is exhausting.
Then people wonder why someone becomes quiet.
Why they stop laughing.
Why they stop dreaming.
Why they stop speaking up.
Why they seem distant.
It’s because they’re carrying an invisible weight every single day.
Now let me speak to the men.
Men…
I know many of you carry enormous pressure.
Society tells you your worth is measured by your paycheck.
By whether the bills are paid.
By whether the lights stay on.
By whether your family has food.
Many of you were never taught how to talk about fear.
Or disappointment.
Or anxiety.
You were taught to work.
To provide.
To keep pushing.
And that’s a heavy burden.
Sometimes when a man says,
“I pay for everything,”
what he’s really saying is,
“I’m exhausted, and I don’t feel appreciated.”
That feeling deserves compassion.
But here’s the hard truth.
If appreciation has to be demanded through fear…
It stops being appreciation.
Now let me speak to the women.
Women often experience relationships through emotional safety.
Many women don’t first ask,
“How much money do we have?”
They ask,
“Am I safe here?”
“Can I be vulnerable here?”
“Will I still be loved when I fail?”
“Can I tell you how I feel without fearing punishment?”
For many women, emotional security is just as important as financial security.
And when emotional safety disappears…
Everything else begins falling apart.
A woman who no longer feels emotionally safe may begin questioning herself constantly.
She may withdraw.
She may cry more.
She may stop sharing what’s really on her heart because she’s afraid it will be used against her later.
That doesn’t mean all women respond the same way, and not all men respond the same way. Every person is different. But many couples find that one partner places greater emphasis on feeling emotionally safe, while the other feels a strong responsibility to provide and protect. Neither need is wrong—they’re simply different needs that both deserve to be heard.
Healthy relationships don’t ask,
“Who’s winning?”
They ask,
“How do we protect each other’s hearts?”
Love isn’t supposed to feel like you’re standing in court every day defending yourself.
Love isn’t supposed to sound like,
“This is MY house.”
“MY money.”
“MY bills.”
“MY stuff.”
Because marriage…
Partnership…
Commitment…
Was never about ownership.
It was about stewardship.
It’s about two imperfect people choosing each other every day.
Not because one has more money.
Not because one has more power.
But because both choose respect.
The Bible says in Ephesians 4:29,
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.”
Notice that.
Building each other up.
Not tearing each other down.
Ephesians 5:21 says,
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
One another.
Mutual respect.
Mutual honor.
Mutual humility.
Not one person ruling over the other through fear.
Not one person controlling the relationship because they earn more.
And not one person weaponizing another’s past forever.
The enemy would love nothing more than for couples to become experts on each other’s failures.
But God calls us to become students of each other’s hearts.
So before you remind someone of the worst thing they’ve ever done…
Ask yourself…
Have they changed?
Have they taken responsibility?
Are they trying?
Before you remind someone,
“I pay all the bills,”
ask yourself…
Am I speaking from love…
Or from frustration?
Am I trying to communicate…
Or am I trying to control?
At the end of the day…
Neither men nor women are the enemy.
Pride is.
Fear is.
Bitterness is.
Unforgiveness is.
Poor communication is.
Control is.
The strongest relationships aren’t the ones where nobody ever gets hurt.
They’re the ones where both people are humble enough to say,
“I was wrong.”
“Help me understand.”
“I’m listening.”
“Let’s heal instead of hurting each other.”
Because love doesn’t thrive where fear lives.
Love thrives where grace, truth, accountability, and mercy all sit at the same table.
That’s the kind of love Christ showed us.
And that’s the kind of love worth fighting for.
