I think solo providers are sometimes viewed differently because there isn’t a front desk, corporate office, or large team behind us.

But this is still our real life job. 🖤

The appointment time you reserve is part of our working day, and once those hours pass, we cannot get them back. There are still products, supplies, rent, insurance, software, education, taxes, preparation, and countless other expenses that go into providing a service.

When you book an appointment and agree to a provider’s cancellation policy, you’re agreeing to the terms under which that service time is being reserved.

That doesn’t mean you can’t cancel. Of course you can. Life happens. Just cancel or reschedule within that provider’s stated policy whenever possible.

But when an appointment or portion of an appointment is canceled at the last minute, that provider lost the opportunity to give those hours to another client. For a solo provider, a two- or three-hour appointment can represent a significant part of the entire workday.

Policies aren’t personal, and enforcing them doesn’t mean a provider lacks compassion.

And if a business’s policies don’t align with what you’re comfortable agreeing to, that’s completely okay too. It may simply mean that provider isn’t the right fit for you.

Mutual respect goes both ways. 🖤

Service providers, stop stressing yourself out trying to accommodate everyone. 🖤

The clients who genuinely want to book with you, will book with you.

You don’t have to chase them, convince them, constantly make exceptions, squeeze them in, stay late, or bend your policies to prove you care about your clients.

There will always be inquiries that never turn into appointments. People who swear they’re going to book. Last-minute cancellations. Late arrivals. And people who suddenly didn’t know the policy they agreed to. 😭

It’s easy to take those things personally, especially when business is slower, but not every empty spot was yours to fill.

Run your business, keep your boundaries, and provide an amazing experience to the people who choose you.

The right clients won’t require you to exhaust yourself just to keep them. 🖤
