“The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) provide age-specific screen time guidelines for toddlers, supported by a growing body of evidence linking excessive screen exposure to developmental harms.

Current AAP Recommendations:
Under 18 months: Avoid all screen media except interactive video chatting
18–24 months: Only high-quality programming, co-viewed with a caregiver — no solo screen use
Ages 2–5 years: Limit to ≤1 hour per day of high-quality educational content

Adherence remains poor: only about 1 in 4 children under 2 and 1 in 3 children aged 2–5 meet these guidelines.
Developmental Impacts of Excessive Screen Time
A large body of evidence demonstrates dose-dependent associations between heavier screen use in toddlers and adverse outcomes across multiple developmental domains:
Language: Greater quantity of screen time is associated with lower language skills, while educational content and co-viewing with caregivers show a positive association with language development. A large Japanese cohort study found a bidirectional relationship — screen time at age 1 predicted poorer communication scores at age 2, which in turn predicted more screen time at age 3.
Cognitive and executive function: Heavier noneducational and solo screen use is associated with delays in cognitive development and executive functioning.
Motor development: Screen time at age 2 was negatively associated with gross motor, fine motor, and personal-social scores at age 3.
Social-emotional and behavioral: Associations include social-emotional delays, hyperactivity, inattention, and aggressive behavior. Using mobile devices for calming is linked to weaker emotion regulation.
Physical health: Associations with obesity, sleep problems, and myopia in preschoolers.”
