Mineral vs. Chemical SPF: Here’s what no one tells you.

When it comes to sunscreen, there isn’t one that’s “better.” The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear every single day.

Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen
Mineral sunscreens contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. They sit on the skin’s surface and reflect and scatter UV rays. They’re often preferred for sensitive or post-procedure skin because they’re generally well tolerated.

Chemical Sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens contain ingredients such as avobenzone, octisalate, and octocrylene. Absorbs UV rays and converts that energy into heat before it can damage your skin. They are typically lightweight, invisible on the skin, and great under makeup. For best protection, apply about 15 minutes before sun exposure.

The Bottom Line
Both mineral and chemical sunscreens are safe and effective when used correctly. Research shows that broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect against UV-induced skin damage and reduces the risk of sunburn while helping prevent premature skin aging (Granger et al., 2022; Marionnet et al., 2022).

No matter which one you choose:
• Wear SPF every day.
• Apply enough to cover all exposed skin.
• Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors.
