Do you remember when you first joined Instagram? For me, it was January 2012. I had just left my job in fashion weeks before and it was my first week at my new job in a new industry, at a social media tech startup in NYC.

My new co-workers asked me if I was on Instagram and I had to ask what it was. It was so nascent that my first several posts didn’t have a single “like” and I wouldn’t realize for months that “likes” are a even a thing.

The other day, I tapped on the views for a story I had shared in the Encore account, and saw that it included multiple bots. I realized then that it was time to go.

When I soft-quit this account over 2 years ago, I kept it around so that it could at least be used to updates to our hours so that our customers could be spared a wasted trip. It’s hard enough to get people into their cars to go to a physical store when the convenient option is to order it and get free shipping for a lower minimum than we are able to offer.

And then last November, I decided to take small steps back into social media, when asked by some customers who were interested in seeing what kind of pieces I was offering through Encore, which I just launched. It has been fun and I have discovered some good things through it, but I have come to the same conclusion as before. This social media thing is too noisy, chaotic, rage bait-y, brain-rotting, and full of things that are not real. It’s only going to get worse, so even it hurts my business, I have to rid my life of it.

Fine Feather presses on in real life and Encore will be my creative outlet and passion project alongside it. I’d love to see you at our last event of the year, ENCORE Happy Hour with Nicci Hicks. You can get your ticket on our website. It will be a real and enjoyable experience with good people, and unlike Amazon, its proceeds support our immediate community.

Sybariterian and Encore are coming together for a pop-up!

After Tal and connected, we bonded over the value of engaging women on a small, community scale around beautifully-crafted accessories and fashion. What each of us does is vastly different from a warehouse of assorted stuff. Each piece is meticulously sourced, identified, and with a story to tell. We have neither the space nor resources for filler.

We believe in keeping these special bags and clothes in circulation and connecting them to those who will wear and cherish them. Because everything from our businesses is preloved and vintage, by wearing or carrying a piece, you get be an original and keep these streets beautiful in a world that has become flattened and homogeneous, and where quality of even new luxury goods is declining.

Guests gathering in well-considered outfits. Not a party, but cocktails are flowing. Not a conference or seminar either, although semi-structured around themes and topics, and there’s a Q&A with the special guest. You’re not attending a performance, yet there is a musician providing live entertainment.

The happening is a salon - a gathering of diverse yet like-minded individuals to socialize, engage and discover. All participants are expected to partake in communal, meaty conversations while having good old-fashioned fun.

In the words of one guest attending a NYC salon in 2021:
“I cannot classify this type of event, and I think that is successful. That is what culture is about right now. It’s about the birth of something. Everyone is so quick to get back to what we are familiar with, but I think we should pivot and adjust and rethink everything.”

If you identify as a member of a social species indelibly fractured by the scars of forced separation from itself, a salon is good medicine.
