A little personal story from today…
I woke up very early to get to work at opening today and stayed over a bit to help out (6-1). Ran home for a quick shower and a bite to eat and went to go to the salon at 2, and was there from 2-9. I had already had a haircut at 6 and took another haircut at 7:30. This beautiful girl was a middleschooler and had grand curly blonde hair. She hadn’t had her haircut in about a year, and wore it in a thick braid.
I had my work cut out for me, and was feeling intimidated during the brush out as I tried to make my plan of attack for her beautiful mane while I was on hour 14 or so of my day. Then, I saw that the book she was reading was the Hunger Games, the first in the series.

I remember what it was like to read that book at 12 years old, to carry it around with me everywhere and wear my hair in a braid. What I would do to experience that for the first time again! It made me really appreciate what I am working towards in that moment. Being able to touch people’s hair with gentle hands and positive energy and help educate them so they can have something they wear proudly. I remember what it was like to be 12 and get my hair done and not really know what I wanted, but know that I wanted it to be long. (Or sometimes, very short). That encounter made me remember that my mom too would take me to all of my appointments and wait patiently for me in the salon chair beside, watching while the stylist took care of me and tried to make us both happy.

I did my best and my client was very happy, but she doesn’t know the extent in which she touched me today by being herself in all of her girlhood. I love doing what I do and am grateful that even when the days are long, I get to be part of a core moment for someone, even if it is a brief exchange about one of my favorite childhood books over a haircut. 🩷
