The country hasn’t gotten any smarter.

In the 1980s, A&W built a burger that gave customers more meat for the money. A third of a pound, priced to compete with the McDonald's Quarter Pounder.

The burger flopped.

Not because it tasted bad. It flopped because a large share of customers believed a quarter pound was bigger than a third of a pound. They thought A&W was trying to rip them off.

Let that sink in.

Three is smaller than four, so one third must be smaller than one fourth. That was the logic. The real math, that cutting a whole into three pieces leaves bigger pieces than cutting it into four, never entered the picture.

That is a failure of basic education, plain and simple. A single fraction beat a national product launch.

People had already made up their minds. The belief felt right, so the facts had to be wrong.

That is the real lesson, and it did not stay in 1980s burger joints.

It is the story of nearly every online argument you will ever see.

Someone reads a headline, decides what it means, and fires off a comment without checking a single thing. Another person jumps in to call them stupid. Then a third person piles on. Nobody opens a source. Nobody asks if they might be wrong. They just want to win, or at least look tough.

Be honest. A lot of those keyboard warriors would never say those things to your face. Behind a screen, they turn into billy bad asses. Face to face, they would probably keep quiet.

That is why arguing online is such a waste of time. You cannot reason someone out of a position they never reasoned themselves into. A&W learned that the hard way.

Check first. Then speak.

Reality does not care what you believe. A third is bigger than a quarter.

Have you ever watched an online argument fall apart because nobody bothered to check the facts? Tell us about it in the comments.
