Not all breast ultrasound is created equal. 💗

If you have dense breasts and want more than a mammogram, here’s what to look for. Whole-breast screening ultrasound is backed by large peer-reviewed published studies and is performed by hand, so the radiologist can examine the outer breast and axillary tail, where many cancers develop. QT imaging is FDA cleared, but it is not approved to replace screening mammography for the detection of cancer, we are not aware of a published screening cancer detection rate from a large trial, and it isn’t included in the ACR Appropriateness Criteria for supplemental screening. Because you lie face down with the breast through an opening, some tissue, including parts of the axillary tail, can be hard to capture. A cleared device isn’t the same as a proven screening test, and no ultrasound replaces your annual mammogram for picking up the earliest changes of cancer like calcifications.
