What does community mean to you? What do you look for in a community? Today, I’m reflecting on the kind of community we’re building here at SESEN. 🤍

Ancient Egyptians believed that after death, a person’s heart would be weighed against Ma’at—the principles of truth, justice, and right order. The heart was associated with thought, memory, and moral life. It’s a beautiful reminder that how we live and treat one another matters. ⚖️

Ancient Egypt endured for thousands of years and created things that continue to inspire us. Its history is complex, but I believe we can still learn from the ideals it cherished: caring for our communities, honoring the world around us, and striving to live with integrity.

That’s what I hope we can build here: a community that is beautiful, respectful, curious, enlightening, and uplifting. ✨

💬 What’s something you grew up questioning that you’ve learned to embrace and cherish?

To me, Hatshepsut remains one of history’s most extraordinary examples of feminine and masculine power existing in harmony.

She teaches us so much about being women, being human, and being leaders: to think boldly, build with purpose, and care for ourselves as we become our fullest selves.

More than 3,500 years ago, Hatshepsut commissioned a trade expedition to Punt that returned with precious myrrh and living myrrh trees to be planted in Egypt. Ointment jars found at her temple at Deir el-Bahri, dating to c. 1470 BC, still preserved traces of fats and fragrances—evidence of the importance of anointing and aromatic botanicals in ancient Egyptian ritual life.

Her legacy helped inspire me to create SESEN® and spend years studying botanicals once treasured by ancient Egyptian royalty—and how their ancient traditions could meet modern skincare science.

Today, frankincense and myrrh continue to be studied for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity.
