More Than Hair. A Story of Identity, Beauty & Freedom.
One of the most powerful moments from my weekend at Intercoiffure in New York was hearing the extraordinary artist KY share her story. What I didn’t expect was how deeply her words would make me reflect on my own life.
From being made to change her natural hair to embracing it as her greatest form of artistic expression, her story was deeply moving.
Watching her stand before a predominantly Caucasian audience, fully owning her story, and receive a standing ovation was unforgettable.
That moment made me reflect on my own journey as a Black woman and business owner. For years, I didn’t always feel free to embrace all of who I was or recognize all that I could become.
After more than three decades in this industry, there’s something incredibly liberating about finally allowing yourself to shine fully and unapologetically.
Laetitia reminded me that hair is so much more than hair. It’s our history, our identity, our voice, and sometimes our freedom.
As artists, we have the privilege of helping others embrace their beauty and tell their own stories.
What a beautiful reminder of why I love this industry. ❤️
