Why is blood sugar important?

Whenever you eat food, your body breaks most of it down into glucose and releases it into your bloodstream. As the glucose in your blood goes up, your pancreas releases insulin, which helps the glucose go from your blood to the rest of your body for energy!

This is why insulin is equally important. Without enough insulin to balance out the glucose in your blood, you can end up with elevated levels for an extended amount of time. Too much glucose in your blood for too long can lead to complications with your skin, eyes, gums, feet, nerves, kidneys, heart, and more. This is the condition known as diabetes.

Anytime you get a metabolic panel with your labs, you’ll be able to see your blood sugar level that you had on the day your blood was drawn. If it is higher than expected, you may benefit from testing your hemoglobin A1c to view a larger scope of your blood sugar levels.

Normal Ranges
Before a meal: 70–100mg/dL
1–2 hours after eating: below 140mg/dL

Watch for symptoms of too much blood sugar, or hyperglycemia:
- Thirst
- Tiredness or weakness
- Headaches
- Peeing often
- Blurred vision

If you suspect that your blood sugar may be too high, there are blood glucose monitors that you can use to check your blood multiple times a day by pricking your finger each time. There are also devices called continuous glucose monitors (CGM) that gets attached to the side of your arm and connects to an app on your phone where you can see your blood sugar levels in real time for two weeks. If you're interested in a CGM, you can contact our office!

Our basic wellness package includes a CBC, CMP, HgbA1c, lipid panel, iron & ferritin, vitamin D, TSH, and random cortisol. If these labs were all purchased at full price, your total would turn out to be $325, but this package offers all of these together for $220 instead. That's $105 less!

Schedule an appointment for labs now on our website at https://www.bwell4ever.org, or you can call us at (423)531-2955. See you soon!

If you've never had your blood drawn, it can be scary to think about. Needles and blood aren't usually a relaxing way to start the day, so we make sure to give you the smoothest possible experience with our comfy reclining chairs, warm neck wraps, and lavender aromatherapy! Here are some commonly asked questions about labs that may help make the whole deal a little easier...

One of the best deals we have to offer is our Body Blueprint Package! If we can't see what's going on in our bodies, it's hard to know how to start being well. This package gives us a snapshot of your body using numbers that we can measure.

The Body Blueprint includes your vitals (temperature, blood pressure, breathing rate, pulse, and oxygen saturation), labs, a urinalysis, a body composition scan on a SECA machine (height, weight, body fat and muscle percentages, and more), and a one on one follow-up health consultation with our in-office PA to review all of your results and discover your next steps forward.

All of these services and bloodwork purchased individually would add up to $500, so make sure to ask for a Body Blueprint to get all of these things for its package price of $275!

Is "inflammation" an issue you need to worry about? 🔥

CRP (C-reactive protein) can help reveal it, especially the high-sensitivity version (hs-CRP).

Your liver produces CRP when there’s inflammation in the body. A standard CRP test catches bigger spikes (like infection or injury). hs-CRP detects the subtle, chronic low-grade inflammation that can fly under the radar. Research links higher levels to increased cardiovascular risk.

Here's a quick guide to hs-CRP levels (in mg/L):
• Under 1.0 → Lower risk / often considered optimal
• 1.0 – 3.0 → Average / intermediate risk
• Over 3.0 → Higher risk
• Over 10 → Often points to acute illness or infection

You can have “normal” cholesterol and still carry elevated inflammatory risk. CRP helps complete the picture and can guide you towards smarter lifestyle or treatment decisions. Lifestyle has a powerful influence! Consistent movement, anti-inflammatory eating patterns, quality sleep, stress management, and maintaining a healthy weight can all support healthier CRP levels.

Come check your CRP with us at BWell!
