Let's talk for a moment about what makes a sunscreen a GOOD sunscreen in my world. Any sunscreen that has UVA UVB protection provides broad spectrum protection. The ingredients do make a difference in the protection. Zinc is KEY! Zinc offers a 100% physical filter. The 4 shown here are all 100% physical and provide UVA/UVB protection.

Lets's break down the benefits between the 4 (my favorites)

1️⃣ Physical Fusion: Physical Sunscreen slightly tinted. Best pressed into skin for even coverage
2️⃣ Sheer Physical UV Defense: Physical Sunscreen. Dries clear: great for men and love for tops of hands. I keep this in my car.
3️⃣ Physical UV 50: Thicker sunscreen that can double as moisturizer. This is a great one for starting kids with a routine because it can be applied directly after cleansing.
4️⃣ Physical Matte SPF 50: Physical sunscreen. A mousse like texture. Best pressing into skin. Long lasting in humid 💦 conditions.

Now here's a question: do you reapply sunscreen?

Did you know if you apply in the morning then have lunch or walk in full sun you should reapply? Simply applying sunscreen once in the morning doesn't give you the protection if you are exposed to the sun 🌞. Wear a hat 👒. Look for shade ☂️ eat under a tree 🌳

Sometimes on action sets many others into motion. Colleen and I do go way back: to my early days as an esthetician working for David & Mary. I learned so much working there albeit such a short time. I've been a solo esthetician much longer than worked with her there. Working solo as an entrepreneur has allowed me the freedom to be a mom and be present for my boys 👩‍👦‍👦. I get to attend games and practices. I volunteer at school. I even get to go on the field trip this month with my youngest. The first in 2 years 🚌.

Slugging is a hot topic on TikTok. There are two ways to do this and one way to AVOID!
Slugging in the esthetics world is not new at all. I often refer to this as a creating a barrier on the skin to allow continued use of keratolytic skincare products such as retinol and tretinoin among others. Often at the onset of use of such products you can experience irritation and redness : even shedding and peeling skin. It's important not to quit using the product or you continually have to start again. My advice is to continue use with a barrier cream before the retinol cream to give the skin a little break. I personally like SkinCeuticals and 💦
It's also important to remember to increase frequency only when skin tolerates. What does this mean exactly? Try using retinol cream one night a week for a month, then increase frequency to two nights for a month and so on until you get used to the new product.
NOW for the TRENDY slugging method: applying the thick layer of vasoline or aqua-phor OVER your regimen at night. This creates an occlusion of skincare making them somewhat more likely to absorb.
Two ✌️very important things to know:
1. DO NOT OCCLUDE OVER RETINOL. this could create more irritation by increasing the potency.
2. If you want to try occluding over your regular skincare routine (please dm if you don't have a regular night time regimen) I suggest doing so 1-2 hours before you go to bed to prevent staining your pillowcase.

BONUS tip: If you have acne I do not recommend occluding skincare; however I do like the use of vasoline, aquphor or hydra balm for acne clients before swimming in chlorine. Chlorine can irritate and dry the skin causing acne to flair. Try a thin layer before you take a plunge if acne plagues you. 🏊‍♂️
