65 MPH in Vermont isn’t really a speed limit — it’s more like a polite suggestion everyone on I-89 and I-91 looks at briefly before continuing whatever Vermont road-trip chaos they already committed to. 😭🚗🌧️
You enter Vermont thinking:
“Beautiful mountains… peaceful forests… maybe a relaxing drive through the Green Mountain State.”
Wrong.
Too slow? There’s already a pickup truck from rural Vermont riding your bumper like you personally insulted maple syrup. 🍁💀
Too fast? Doesn’t matter — somebody in a Subaru with a Vermont sticker still flies past you through the rain like visibility is optional.
You try driving a respectable 72.
Immediately passed by:
• a Burlington commuter weaving through traffic like they have somewhere VERY important to be ⚡
• a muddy Vermont pickup carrying enough equipment to survive a week in the woods
• and one college student somehow balancing coffee, GPS directions, and lane changes simultaneously 💀
Then comes Vermont weather.
Not normal weather.
One minute it’s sunny over rolling Green Mountains.
Ten minutes later, fog settles over the hills like the entire state activated stealth mode. 🌫️🍂
Suddenly:
• rain starts falling
• brake lights stretch for miles
• wet leaves make the roads look like a postcard
• and somebody slows down because they spotted a beautiful mountain view and apparently the interstate became a scenic overlook 😭
Classic Vermont.
You finally start moving again and think:
“Okay… smooth sailing now.”
Absolutely not.
Now you’re trapped behind:
• an RV heading toward Stowe
• a convoy of leaf-peepers heading toward the mountains
• and at least one out-of-state driver creating emotional damage in the left lane.
Meanwhile, somebody nearby is confidently driving through a Vermont downpour with a cup of coffee like this is completely normal. ☕🌧️
And just when you think things can’t get stranger…
A deer appears beside the highway.
Not scared.
Not moving.
Just staring directly at traffic like it owns property in the Green Mountains and pays taxes there. 🦌💀
Your GPS says:
“Arrival in 38 minutes.”
Vermont says:
“That depends… are you crossing Burlington traffic, driving through mountain fog, following a leaf-peeping convoy, or getting trapped behind road construction?” 😭
And somehow through ALL of this…
There’s still one person driving exactly 65 in the passing lane like they were personally hired by the Green Mountain State to teach everyone patience.
Welcome to Vermont highways. 🍁🚗
Where every road trip can include mountain weather, sudden fog, slow-moving traffic, deer encounters, construction cones, tourist traffic, winding roads, and enough driving stress to count as cardio. 😂🌲🌧️

A major data center proposal is drawing strong attention in rural Vermont as residents weigh the future of their farmland, forests, and small communities.
Residents have raised concerns about large-scale development that could transform Vermont’s open countryside into a sprawling complex of server buildings, substations, transmission infrastructure, and industrial facilities.
Many community members are questioning whether productive farmland and rural landscapes should be converted for massive technology projects, while others are raising concerns about water use, energy demand, traffic, noise, and the long-term impact on local quality of life.
One sentiment often heard in rural communities is simple:
“We’re not against technology. We’re for protecting the land, farms, and communities that have defined this place for generations.”
Across Vermont, conversations about development continue as communities balance economic growth with the preservation of family farms, working landscapes, small towns, and the character of the Green Mountain State.
From the rolling hills of the Northeast Kingdom to the farms of the Champlain Valley and the mountains of southern Vermont, these open fields are more than vacant land.
They’re family history.
They’re local food production.
They’re rural heritage.
They’re a way of life. 🌲🌾
Technology can be built in many places.
Vermont’s farmland and rural character are not easily replaced.
This isn’t just about development.
It’s about deciding what kind of Vermont future generations will inherit. 💚

🌾 Vermont farmland is more than just open space.
Vermont’s farms are an important part of the state’s landscape, producing food, supporting farm families, and helping sustain rural communities across the Green Mountain State.
At the same time, Vermont continues to face growth and development, creating an important question:
How should Vermont balance new development with protecting the farmland that supports agriculture, families, and rural communities?
From the rolling fields of the Champlain Valley to the hills and small farms across the state, agricultural land is closely connected to Vermont’s rural character. 🌾🏡
There may not be a simple answer—but the conversation matters.
