Darnell Atkins turned an unexpected path into a bold business move with purpose.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, he came home and faced the struggle of finding steady work. Instead of giving up, he paid attention to opportunity. A local African American-owned nail salon showed him the power of the beauty industry, where one service could bring real income and loyal clients.
He learned the craft, became certified, and stepped into a space where African American men are rarely seen. That alone made his journey powerful. But Darnell did more than offer manicures and pedicures. He challenged stereotypes, built trust, and showed other men that passion should never be limited by fear, judgment, or old ideas about success.

Itâs time we talk about more than just âcontent blocks.â đïž Have you seen the story of the young woman who sold her first home to help her boyfriend buy his house, only to find out she had all the liability (the mortgage) and none of the ownership (the deed)? Itâs a tough lesson that highlights a gap in the conversations weâre having with our kids.
Sometimes, you need to go deeper than a photo grid. The past three years, weâve been intentional about discussing:
đïžThe Transition: College prep and launching young adults.
đïžThe Balance: Managing marriage, kids, and professional growth.
đïžThe Reality: Raising teenagers in 2026.
The Salon is a space for these exact discussions. Join me for Morning LIVES with Vanity from 6 AM to 7 AM today. Weâre jumpstarting the meaningful conversations our young adults need us to have with them.
ANEMIA | HAIR LOSS | BLACK WOMEN
For many Black women, thinning edges or shedding isnât just about the products we use,itâs about whatâs happening on the inside. Anemia (iron deficiency) is a leading cause of hair loss in our community, as iron helps deliver oxygen to the cells that repair and grow your strands.
When your iron is low, your hair goes into âsurvival mode,â and growth takes a backseat. The good news? You can eat your way back to health!
Iron-rich power players to add to your plate:
đż Spinach & Kale (Vitamin C helps absorption!)
đ„© Grass-fed Red Meat or Liver
đ« Lentils & Chickpeas
đ Pumpkin Seeds
Listen to your body, check your levels, and nourish your crown from the inside out. And if all else fails, get an iron infusion.

A Montreal hair salon has been ordered to pay $500 to a non-binary customer who claimed the companyâs booking system is discriminatory.
Alexe FrĂ©dĂ©ric Migneault identifies as non-binary and was asked to select a male or female haircut on the salonâs site in 2023 when looking to book an appointment.
Station 10, the salon, charges by the minute and co-owner Alexis Labrecque claims that the salon asks for customersâ genders to help with the scheduling process, saying âIt takes typically takes longer for a womanâs haircut than a manâs haircut. So we optimize our agendas accordingly.â
âIt is not fair, and itâs not legal to tell me no, since you donât fit into my worldview, I donât want to do anything with you, and I donât want you as my customer,â said Migneault.
âI was already spiraling into a huge mental health crisis, and it precipitated my, falling to complete a disability,â they said. âI was unable to work for a year and a half.â
They filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission, which recommended a $500 settlement. Labrecque refused to pay, so Migneault sued for $12,000.
âWe fought back because we we didnât agree with the prejudice that we might have caused,â said Lebrecque, who added that a few months after receiving the complaint, the salon updated its website to include a gender-neutral booking option.
The courts agreed with the commission and ordered Station 10 to pay $500 in damages.

âšLoctician |
The natural hair world is its own ecosystem. A vibrant, and sometimes chaotic mix of artists, passionate educators, herbalists, and the âhotepsâ who will âGrand Riseâ you to infinity. Itâs a space where ancestry, traditions and modern artistry collaborate. In most cases itâs easy to find superficial synergy, but increasingly difficult to find a professional who truly anchors the community.
In an industry that can get distracted with clout-chasing and fleeting trends, only a few Locticians stand out. Tanisha consistency demonstrates integrity, transparency and great customer service. We donât always have to look to our predecessors for inspiration. Sometimes, excellence is sitting right next to you!
