Astaxanthin has demonstrated exceptionally high antioxidant activity in laboratory testing. In one comparison, its oxygen radical absorbance capacity measured more than 65 times that of vitamin C.

In a separate in-vitro assay, its singlet-oxygen-quenching activity was reported to be 6,000 times greater.

These tests measure specific antioxidant responses under controlled conditions, but they help illustrate how effectively astaxanthin can neutralize certain reactive oxygen species. Its unique structure allows it to span lipid-rich cell membranes, helping defend against oxidative stress from UV exposure, pollution, and normal cellular activity. For skin, this may support hydration, elasticity, resilience, and the preservation of collagen and other structural components.

That is why we include astaxanthin in RENEW. And because no single antioxidant can do everything, we pair it with Kakadu plum, a whole-fruit botanical naturally rich in vitamin C and complementary polyphenols.

Vitamin C brings its own distinct benefits. It supports collagen synthesis, helps protect existing collagen, and can help visibly brighten discoloration and promote a more even tone. Astaxanthin and vitamin C are not competing for the title of “strongest” antioxidant. They work differently, and together offer a more complete approach to defending, brightening, and renewing the skin.
