“YOU DON’T NEED TO CHECK THE SCALP IF THE CLIENT ISN’T COMPLAINING.”
Believe it or not, this happens ALL. THE. TIME.
We see it hundreds of times on social media. We hear it in client and stylist testimonials. And we see it firsthand behind the chair.
And here’s the thing… a lot of the time, it isn’t because the stylist doesn’t care.
There are SO many extension artists who are self taught. They learned how to put extensions in, but were never actually taught what to look for underneath them.
No shade. No stylist bashing. Just awareness about a very real problem in our industry.
A client not complaining does NOT automatically mean their scalp is healthy.
They may not know what excessive tension feels like.
They may think soreness is normal.
They may not realize the itching, pulling or tenderness they’re experiencing is something they should mention.
And sometimes, there can be signs of stress before the client feels anything at all.
That’s why maintenance should never just be:
Remove. Reinstall. Next client.
LOOK at the scalp.
Look at the follicles.
Look for redness, irritation, tension, breakage or changes in density.
Look at the grow out.
Look at the beadwork.
Look at the hair you’re asking to support another 4, 6 or 8 weeks of wear.
Our responsibility as extension artists doesn’t end when the install looks beautiful from the outside.
Healthy hair and scalp will ALWAYS matter more than a perfect Instagram photo.
And if nobody ever taught you this?
That’s exactly why we’re talking about it. 🖤
Education changes the industry.

8 weeks grown out—and there’s no matting, no buildup and no damage hiding underneath.
THIS is what a healthy 8-week grow-out should look like.
But let’s make something really clear:
Not every client is an 8-week candidate.
Maintenance is not a one-size-fits-all timeline.
Some clients can safely and beautifully make it to 8 weeks. Others need to be back in your chair at 4, 5 or 6 weeks depending on their density, texture, natural shedding, lifestyle and how their hair is responding.
The goal is NOT to see how long we can make extensions last between appointments.
The goal is to maintain the health of the natural hair.
This client IS an 8-week candidate, and this is exactly what I want to see when she comes back.
Flip the row up and look inside:
No matting.
No knots.
No tangling.
No buildup around the beads.
Healthy, clean scalp.
Then we remove the beads and look at the band.
Still clean. No buildup. No tangled mess wrapped around it.
And THAT matters.
Because a beautiful install on day one only tells me so much.
Show me the grow-out.
That’s where you see how the method, the installation, the maintenance schedule and the client’s home care are actually performing.
Then we clean everything up, resection, reinstall with proper tension and send her out with another beautiful, healthy installation.
8 weeks isn’t the goal.
Healthy hair is. 🖤
