Your gut health is shaped by more than any single “superfood.”
Pairing fiber-rich plants with quality proteins, healthy fats, and a variety of whole foods can help nourish your gut microbiome, support healthy digestion, and provide the nutrients your body needs to thrive.
The goal isn’t perfection-it’s variety, quality, and consistency. Small, intentional choices at each meal can add up to meaningful support for your overall health.

Pregnancy is a time of incredible change—and your care should support the whole person, not just the pregnancy. 🤍
Functional medicine can complement routine prenatal care by taking a personalized look at nutrition, nutrient status, thyroid and metabolic health, digestion, sleep, stress, and other factors that influence maternal wellness.
The goal isn’t to replace your OB or midwife. It’s to work alongside your prenatal care team to help create the healthiest foundation possible for both mom and baby.
Because supporting a healthy pregnancy starts with supporting a healthy mom. 🌿
Heavy periods aren’t always “just part of being a woman.” 🩸
Your menstrual cycle is influenced by more than reproductive hormones alone. Thyroid dysfunction—particularly hypothyroidism—can be associated with heavier, longer, or irregular periods.
That doesn’t mean every heavy period is caused by the thyroid. There are many potential causes, which is exactly why looking at the whole picture matters.
Instead of only asking, “How do we stop the bleeding?” we also want to ask:
Why is this happening?
Understanding thyroid function, iron status, hormones, symptoms, and overall health can help uncover pieces of the puzzle and guide more individualized care. 💚

Not every supplement deserves a spot in your daily routine. 💊🌿
Vitamin D, omega-3s, magnesium, fiber, B12, iron—the list of supplements with potential benefits is long. But here’s the part that often gets overlooked:
A supplement is only “worth it” when it makes sense for YOU.
Your nutrient needs can be influenced by your diet, medications, lifestyle, health history, symptoms, and current nutrient levels. Taking more isn’t necessarily better—and in some cases, supplementing something you don’t need can be counterproductive.
At Root Cause Functional Family Medicine, we believe in testing instead of guessing and using targeted supplementation based on the individual.
Before adding another bottle to your supplement cabinet, ask: Do I know why I’m taking this?

We often say we're "too busy" to prioritize our health.
Too busy to move our bodies.
Too busy to prepare nourishing meals.
Too busy to manage stress.
Too busy to get enough sleep.
Too busy to schedule that appointment we've been putting off.
But our bodies keep score.
Investing in your wellness today may help reduce the burden of chronic illness tomorrow. Small, consistent choices made over time can have a meaningful impact on your long-term health.
At Root Cause Functional Family Medicine, we believe prevention is just as important as treatment. Taking time to care for yourself isn't selfish—it's one of the most valuable investments you can make.
✨ Your future self will thank you.

Artificial sweeteners are often marketed as “metabolically neutral,” but emerging research suggests the story may be more complex.
A recent laboratory study examined 39 commonly used sweeteners and found that many altered the growth of gut bacteria. Researchers also identified more than 100 interactions between sweeteners and other compounds—including medications—that influenced the microbiome in different ways. Pasted text.txt
Here’s the important part: this was an in vitro (laboratory) study, not a study in humans. The researchers specifically noted that their findings do not prove these effects occur in people and that more research is needed before making dietary recommendations. Pasted text.txt
At Root Cause Functional Family Medicine, we believe in looking beyond headlines. Rather than labeling foods as simply “good” or “bad,” we focus on understanding how nutrition, medications, lifestyle, and gut health interact to affect each individual.
Science is always evolving—and so should our understanding of it.

You’ve probably heard the word methylation—especially if you’ve been told you have an MTHFR variant—but what does it actually mean?
Methylation is a normal biochemical process that occurs throughout the body every second of every day. It plays a role in DNA regulation, neurotransmitter production, detoxification, cardiovascular health, and how certain vitamins are used.
When methylation isn’t functioning efficiently, it may contribute to symptoms or abnormal lab findings in some people. However, genetics are only one piece of the puzzle. Nutrient status, gut health, inflammation, stress, sleep, and environmental factors can all influence how well these pathways function.
At Root Cause Functional Family Medicine, we look beyond a single gene to understand the factors that may be affecting your overall health and create a personalized plan based on your unique needs.
This post is for educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose or treat any medical condition.

IV Ozone Therapy is one of the most discussed therapies in functional and integrative medicine-and one of the most misunderstood.
Unlike environmental ozone, medical-grade ozone is administered under controlled clinical conditions and works by creating signaling molecules that help support oxygen utilization, immune function, circulation, and cellular resilience.
Through a process called Major Autohemotherapy
(MAH), a small amount of blood is collected, exposed to a precise oxygen-ozone mixture, and then reintused.
This controlled process stimulates biological responses that may help support healing, recovery, and overall wellness.
At Root Cause Functional Family Medicine, we believe in understanding the science behind every therapy and helping patients make informed decisions about their health.

Histamine is more than just something involved in allergies.
It's a natural chemical messenger that plays important roles in your immune system, digestion, nervous system, and even sleep. But when histamine builds up faster than your body can break it down, it may contribute to symptoms like headaches, flushing, hives, nasal congestion, digestive discomfort, dizziness, anxiety, or trouble sleeping.
Functional medicine looks beyond symptom management to identify why histamine may be elevated. Factors such as gut health, nutrient status, hormone fluctuations, chronic inflammation, certain medications, and environmental exposures can all influence how your body processes histamine.
If you've been struggling with unexplained symptoms, understanding your histamine balance may be one piece of the puzzle.
💙 Every person's story is different, and finding the root cause is the first step toward lasting wellness.
