You’ve gotta start somewhere… and apparently my somewhere was Mary Kay. LOL.
I’m Kate, aka Kate Hana Artistry, and I’ve been doing makeup professionally since 2009/2010. I started with Mary Kay LITERALLY just to see if I even liked makeup artistry and to know how to retain clients. Turns out, I loved it.
That led to over eight years with MAC Cosmetics, and in 2016, I took the leap and started Kate Hana Artistry. I also became a licensed aesthetician because I wanted to understand the skin underneath the makeup and elevate my artistry even further.
Did I dream of being a makeup artist as a kid? Nope.
I was a feminine little tomboy, a true 90s kid who loved being outside, getting dirty and had rats as pets. I’ve since traded the rats for cats, but I’m still following wherever my heart takes me.
Makeup artistry became my version of rolling up my sleeves and creating. Brushes everywhere, swatches all over my hands and occasionally makeup on my clothes.
It’s given me creativity, adventure, connection and so much joy.
Now, after multiple Best Makeup Artist nominations, local community wins and my first Oregon Wedding Day Best Of win this year, I still think about how it all started.
No master plan. Just curiosity, a little Mary Kay, MAC Cosmetics and following my heart.
And damn, I’m thankful I did.
Fun fact: “Well, I gotta get back to it” is a perfectly acceptable way to leave almost any social situation.
What is “it”? Irrelevant.
Where am I going? Also irrelevant.
Do I actually have something to get back to? Mind your business.
Anyway, I gotta get back to it.
Not related to anything makeup but fun fact:
“Interesting” is the Swiss Army knife of responses and basically a verbal poker face.
Did I love what you said?
Did I hate it?
Am I concerned for everyone involved?
You’ll never know.
It’s not lying. It’s emotional privacy.

From makeup trial to wedding day, and myth bust for makeup with photography!
So what exactly is a bridal makeup trial?
Think of your trial, also known as a bridal preview, as the rough draft of your wedding day makeup. It’s your chance to see how everything looks, feels and wears before the big day.
These appointments are very different from a regular makeup appointment. We can spend anywhere from an hour to sometimes two hours talking, collaborating, trying different ideas and getting specific about what you love and what you might want to adjust. We’re also talking through your wedding morning, timeline expectations and how we keep everything moving smoothly in the chair.
Of course, I want you leaving your trial feeling confident and GORGEOUS, but here’s the thing:
Your wedding day makeup will be even better.
That’s when I take everything we learned at your trial and fine tune it. Maybe we adjust the blush, soften something, add a little more contrast or enhance something you absolutely loved. The trial gives us the blueprint. Wedding day is the finished product.
And a little wedding makeup myth I will happily bust forever:
Makeup does NOT have to be heavy or layered on to photograph beautifully.
Great wedding makeup is about balance. The right amount of shine versus matte. The right pigmentation. The right placement. Your blush may be a tad bolder than your everyday blush and your eyes may have a little more contrast, but that doesn’t mean you need loads of makeup.
It means knowing where the camera needs a little more.
My goal is for you to look phenomenal in your photos AND still look in the mirror in person and see you.
Just the elevated, wedding day version.

Look, anyone can do their own makeup.
But add in a little more sunshine and suddenly your skin tone has changed. Add texture, dryness, breakouts, sensitivity, stress, hormonal changes… or your skin just deciding to do something completely different the week of your event.
Then there’s everyday makeup vs. professional event makeup. Makeup that needs to last, look beautiful in person AND photograph beautifully.
And sometimes? It’s just nice not to have to think about ANY of it.
That’s where I come in.
I’m a professional Makeup Artist AND licensed aesthetician with 17 years of experience. My kit is built for different skin tones, undertones, skin types, textures and sensitivities. I have the products, tools, training and years of trial and error to know how to adjust when something isn’t going according to Plan A.
Because when you sit in my chair, I’m never thinking:
“I think I can do this.”
I’m thinking:
“I’ve got you.”
That’s what experience brings. Consistency, preparation and the ability to adapt.
My job isn’t to turn you into someone else. It’s to collaborate with you, prioritize how YOU want to feel and create the best version of yourself.
You, just enhanced.
And for a little while, you don’t have to think about a damn thing. Sit in my chair. I’ve got the rest.

What’s the point?
Sometimes I think about this question during wedding season.
What’s the point of the early alarms, the late nights, the endless emails, the timelines, contracts, invoices, packing, unpacking, cleaning, sanitizing, editing, ordering, planning, prepping, hauling, creating, problem solving and all the behind the scenes work that no one ever sees?
What’s the point of working through weekends, eating lunch at weird hours, sometimes forgetting to eat lunch at all, and pouring so much of ourselves into this industry?
This. This is the point.
That smile.
That little moment between two people who are completely wrapped up in each other.
Our clients are the point.
And I think that’s something every wedding vendor understands.
We have spent years honing our talents, investing in our businesses, curating our styles and turning something we were passionate about into something we’re really freaking good at.
Not so we can work with everyone.
But so the right clients can find us. The ones who see our work and say, “That. That’s what I want.”
And then all of these individual artists, creatives and professionals come together for one day to create something that feels a little bit like magic.
The planner. The photographer. The florist. The caterer. The rental teams. The musicians. The hairstylist. The makeup artist. The dress designer and bridal shop. And countless hands behind the scenes.
We’re all creating completely different pieces of the same experience.
And then you get a photo like this.
A bride glowing.
Two people ridiculously happy.
A moment they’ll get to keep forever.
That’s the point.
Their joy. Their happiness. Their memories.
What an incredible privilege it is that this gets to be our work!

I think being a professional makeup artist is about so much more than the makeup I provide on the day of your wedding. It’s about being part of a moment you’ll carry with you for a lifetime.
You’ve invested so much into curating a dream venue, a team you can trust, and all of the little details that bring this dream to life, all to celebrate the love of your life. And somehow, I get to be one small part of that.
My brides are truly some of my favorite people.
Their excitement. Their joy. Their vulnerability. Their passion. The thought and intention they’ve poured into every detail. It always leaves me in awe because I get a front-row seat to such an incredible milestone in their lives.
And I don’t take that lightly.
I’m not there to make my brides beautiful. They already are.
My job is to use my artistry to enhance what’s already there, to create an elevated version of the woman sitting in my chair and, hopefully, help her see herself the way everyone who loves her already does.
Because yes, I’m there to do your makeup.
But I’m also there to be part of a moment you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
And that will forever be one of my favorite parts of what I do.
Thank you Haley Lowry Haywood for trusting in me
