Did you know your gut plays a role in your hormones, and your hormones show up on your skin? 👇🏼

Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria, and some of them have a specific job: helping your body manage estrogen. They produce an enzyme that decides how much estrogen gets reused versus flushed out.

When your gut isn't balanced, this process can get thrown off, and your estrogen levels can end up too high or too low.

✨Why does that matter for your skin?✨

Estrogen helps keep collagen strong, keeps skin hydrated, and supports your skin's natural barrier. So when estrogen gets out of balance because of what's happening in your gut, you may notice it as dryness, a weaker barrier, or skin that seems to age faster, even if your skincare routine hasn't changed.

The same connection exists with cortisol, your stress hormone.

An imbalanced gut has been linked to higher cortisol and a disrupted sleep-wake rhythm. Higher cortisol fuels inflammation, and that inflammation often shows up as flare-ups: rosacea redness, breakouts, or skin that just isn't calming down no matter what you put on it.

🚨If your skin isn't responding the way you'd expect to your products, the answer isn't always a stronger product.

Sometimes the root cause starts in the gut, not on the surface.

This is still an evolving area of research, and everyone's gut is different, so it's not a one-size-fits-all fix. But it's a good reminder that skin health is connected to what's going on inside your body, not just what you put on it.

Your skin isn't broken. Your gut might just be loud.

🚨The gut-skin axis just got more specific🚨

New research just gave us the clearest picture yet of why gut health and skin health are so connected, and it's not just one thing causing everything.

Scientists found 10 specific "messenger" molecules that carry signals from your gut straight to your skin. And here's the wild part: different skin concerns are linked to different messengers.

Eczema? Its own set of messengers.
Rosacea and alopecia? A totally different set.
Contact dermatitis? Different again.

So when we say "gut health affects skin health," this is what that actually looks like under the hood. It's not one leaky pipe causing chaos everywhere. It's more like your gut has its own internal texting system, and different messages show up on your skin in different ways.

This research is still early (it shows strong patterns, not proof of exact cause and effect), but it's a big step toward understanding why what you eat and how your gut is doing shows up on your face, scalp, and skin.

Moral of the story: if your skin's been acting up, it might be worth having a conversation about what's happening beneath the surface, literally.

"Your 'Dandruff' Might Actually Be a Yeast Problem

Stop blaming your scalp. Start looking at your gut.
If you deal with stubborn flaking, greasy scale, or redness around your eyebrows and hairline, you might be dealing with seborrheic dermatitis, not just dandruff. It's a chronic inflammatory condition driven by a yeast called Malassezia that lives on everyone's skin. Having it isn't the problem. Your immune system overreacting to it is.

So why does it flare for some people and not others? A lot of it comes back to the gut. When the gut lining is compromised or microbial diversity is low, the immune system stays primed and reactive, which lowers the threshold for a flare whenever that yeast is present. Since the gut houses most of the body's immune tissue, chronic gut inflammation can show up on your skin long before you'd think to connect the two.

Common triggers like stress, poor sleep, cold weather, and nutrient depletion don't cause seborrheic dermatitis on their own, but they add fuel to an already reactive system.

Treating the scalp topically can calm a flare, but if it keeps coming back, the gut is often where the real answer is hiding.

There are a few things we no longer think should be treated as “normal” in skincare.

Skin that stings every time you apply your routine.

Constantly adding another active because something changed.

Assuming flaky, tight, or dehydrated skin is simply something to accept.

Treating recurring breakouts as inevitable.

Calling skin “sensitive” and stopping the inquiry there.

Believing more steps automatically means a more sophisticated routine.

Or looking only at the skin while ignoring what may have changed around it.

We think changing skin deserves a different first question:

What changed?

Maybe the product changed.
Maybe the routine changed.
Maybe the skin changed.
Maybe something else in the person’s broader context changed.

Sometimes several things change together.

The point isn’t to assume we already know the answer.

It’s to widen the inquiry before deciding what comes next.

That is the thinking behind Results by Nature®:

Recognition before explanation.
Context before recommendation.
System before symptom.
State, not type.

Changing skin deserves better questions.

What’s one skincare belief you used to accept that you’ve changed your mind about over time?

Your Skin Isn't the Problem. It's the Messenger.

I spent years staring at my own skin in the mirror before I ever looked at it through a clinician's eyes.

Acne that wouldn't respond to anything I tried. Flaking, irritation, and flare ups that had a rhythm I couldn't explain, until I started paying attention to what else was happening in my body at the same time. Digestion that felt off. Bloating. A gut that seemed to react before my skin did, every single time.

Nobody connected those dots for me. I had to find them myself.

That search is the reason I do this work.

Why the skin-gut connection matters clinically:

The skin and the gut share an enormous concentration of immune activity and nervous system signaling. When something disrupts the gut, whether that's stress, an imbalance in the microbiome, or a food sensitivity, the skin is often the first place the body shows it. Redness, breakouts, sensitivity, and reactivity aren't random. They're data.

Most of us were trained to treat what we see on the surface. Fewer of us were trained to ask why it's happening in the first place.

That gap is where people spend years and money on products and protocols that were never going to touch the root cause.

Why I still love the clinic and the consultation room:

I could talk about mast cells and histamine and the gut-skin axis all day, and I do. But what actually keeps me in this work is sitting across from someone and watching the moment it clicks for them. The moment a client realizes their skin was never being difficult. It was being honest.

Every consultation is a chance to give someone the explanation I didn't have. Not a quick fix, a real understanding of what their body has been trying to say, and what to do about it.

That's the work.
Clinical enough to be credible.
Personal enough to be honest.

That's why I educate, and why I'll keep doing it.

If your gut feels off and your skin looks inflamed even when your routine is perfect, it might not be your products or your diet. It might be your sleep.

Even a single night of poor sleep can disrupt gut barrier integrity and shift microbiota composition. Clinical studies show increased intestinal permeability and changes in short chain fatty acid production that elevate systemic inflammation. Consumers often feel this as bloating, cramping, irregularity, food sensitivities, and reactive digestion that seems to appear out of nowhere.

Cortisol rises when sleep drops. Research links inadequate sleep to elevated baseline cortisol, increased oxidative stress, and slower collagen synthesis. This pattern shows up as irritability, stress reactivity, sugar cravings, and mid‑day crashes that make the whole system feel unstable.

Neurological changes appear quickly. Sleep deprivation increases neuroinflammation and impairs hippocampal function. Consumers feel this as brain fog, slower processing, mood swings, and reduced stress tolerance.

Skin reflects these internal changes. Sleep loss slows barrier recovery, reduces microcirculation, and increases inflammatory cytokines. The visible result is dehydration, dullness, sensitivity, redness, breakouts, and slower recovery from treatments or environmental stressors.

The gut–skin axis becomes reactive as dysbiosis alters neurotransmitter production and vagal signaling. When the gut barrier weakens, endotoxins enter circulation and amplify systemic inflammation. This inflammatory load shows up on the skin as congestion, flare‑ups, and impaired barrier repair.

Sleep is not passive recovery!

It is an active biological recalibration of the gut, skin, endocrine system, and brain. When sleep drops, every system involved in gut integrity, skin health, cortisol balance, and neurological performance becomes compromised.

Women are told menopause is a moment. It is not.

It is a neuroendocrine transition that reshapes the skin and gut in stages. Perimenopause begins the hormonal instability. Estrogen and progesterone fluctuate. Barrier lipids drop. Collagen organization weakens. Microbiome diversity declines. Inflammation rises. Sensitivity increases. Digestion becomes more reactive.

Menopause accelerates the shift. Estrogen falls. Collagen loss speeds up. Skin hydration and repair slow down. The gut loses estrogen‑responsive species that regulate mucosal integrity and metabolic balance. This is why new food reactions appear. This is why bloating and weight redistribution feel sudden. These are microbiome‑driven changes. Not personal failures.

Postmenopause stabilizes at a lower hormone baseline. Skin thickness continues to decline. Microvascular circulation slows. The microbiome becomes more androgen‑dominant. Sebum quality changes. Inflammatory tone increases.

Strategic support becomes essential. Barrier repair. Microbiome restoration. Nutrition aligned with the new metabolic landscape.

If you want guidance that connects your skin changes to your gut shifts and helps you navigate each stage with clarity and strategy, I coach women through this transition with clinical precision. Send me a message to begin.
