Desmond Kaplan, MD

There he completed a residency in Psychiatry and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry through the University of Tel Aviv. Dr. Kaplan moved to the United States to complete a second fellowship in Developmental Disabilities at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and the Johns Hopkins Depart of Psychiatry. He remained on the faculty of Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins for another three years specializing in autism. Recruited by Sheppard Pratt to develop their Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry Unit, Dr. Kaplan was instrumental in the unit becoming a nationally and internationally renowned program for the treatment, training and research of children and adolescents suffering from Autism and other developmental disabilities, a field he is considered an expert in. He was also the inaugural Medical Director of Sheppard Pratt’s Behavioral Telepsychiatry Program, an innovative video conferencing system which became the largest provider of telepsychiatry services in rural Maryland. Dr. Kaplan has founded and led international mental health collaborations with colleagues in Israel, Kenya and South Africa.
