Even within Boswellia sacra, the aromatic profile can change depending on where the trees grow, the soil, climate, moisture, geography, how the resin is harvested, how fresh it is, and how it’s handled after harvest.

All of those things can influence the natural chemical profile — or chemotype — of the resin and essential oil.

That’s why one frankincense may smell heavier, sharper, smokier or more bitter… while another can smell incredibly fresh and almost perfume-like.

Burning frankincense is simple—but using the right materials makes all the difference. Here’s everything you need to know.👇

🌿 1. Choose the right frankincense.

Not all frankincense is the same. Different species produce different scents and qualities.

We recommend Premium Hojari (Boswellia sacra) from Salalah, Oman—the world’s most prized frankincense. It’s known for its fresh, citrus-like aroma and has been traded as a luxury resin for thousands of years.

🔥 2. Choose the right charcoal.

Use bamboo charcoal or natural coconut charcoal discs.

Avoid quick-light charcoal with chemical additives, as they can affect the pure fragrance of the resin.

🏺 3. Use a heat-safe burner.

Place your charcoal in a traditional incense burner or any heatproof dish on a non-flammable surface. Always keep it away from children and pets.

🔥 4. Light the charcoal.

Using tongs, light the edge of the charcoal with a lighter or torch.

Wait 2–5 minutes until it’s glowing red and covered with a light grey ash. That’s when it’s ready.

🌿 5. Add the frankincense.

Place 1–3 small pieces of Hojari resin on the hot charcoal.

Within seconds, you’ll enjoy the rich, natural aroma. Add another piece whenever you’d like a stronger scent.

One charcoal disc typically burns for 30–60 minutes, allowing you to add more resin as needed.

1. BURN IT AS INCENSE:
Place a few small pieces over a hot charcoal disc and let the aromatic smoke fill the room. This is one of the oldest and most traditional ways to experience frankincense.

2. USE AN ELECTRIC RESIN BURNER:
Want the aroma without charcoal? An electric incense burner gently warms the resin and releases its beautiful citrusy, woody scent.

3. MAKE A FRANKINCENSE-INFUSED OIL:
Crush the resin and slowly infuse it into a carrier oil such as jojoba. Once strained, the infused oil can be incorporated into your skincare routine.

4. MAKE YOUR OWN BALM OR SALVE:
Use your finished frankincense-infused oil as the oil portion of a homemade balm or salve.

5. CREATE YOUR OWN INCENSE BLEND:
Mix frankincense with other aromatic resins, herbs or woods to create your own custom incense blend.
