Therapeutic massage, a non-drug approach to pain management.

When muscular discomfort develops from an injury, repetitive stress, overuse, or prolonged tension, therapeutic massage can provide a holistic, non-drug approach to managing pain and supporting recovery. Unlike pain medication, which primarily changes how the nervous system perceives pain, targeted bodywork addresses the muscular and soft-tissue factors that may be contributing to that discomfort.
At Rub Massage Austin, I use techniques such as deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and assisted stretching to help reduce excessive muscular tension, improve mobility, and encourage healthy circulation around areas of discomfort. For some people, incorporating regular therapeutic massage into their recovery and wellness routine may reduce their reliance on over-the-counter pain medications for certain types of muscular soreness and tension. Massage isn't a replacement for appropriate medical care or prescribed medication, particularly following a significant injury, but it can be a valuable part of a comprehensive approach to feeling better and getting back to the activities you enjoy.

The triceps: more than just an arm muscle.

The triceps brachii is made up of three distinct muscles—the long head, lateral head, and medial head—that work together to straighten the elbow, stabilize the shoulder, and generate power during pushing movements. Whether you're lifting weights, playing tennis or pickleball, throwing a baseball, or performing repetitive tasks at work, these muscles can become overworked and develop painful trigger points. When this happens, pain isn't always limited to the back of the arm. Tight, dysfunctional triceps muscles can refer discomfort into the shoulder, down the arm toward the elbow, and may even contribute to reduced strength and limited range of motion. At Rub Massage Austin, I use targeted deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and assisted stretching to restore normal muscle function, improve circulation, and reduce excessive muscular tension. By addressing the source of the problem rather than simply treating where the pain is felt, therapeutic massage can help relieve discomfort, improve mobility, and get you back to work, the gym, or your favorite sport with greater confidence and less pain.

Can massage help strained intercostal muscles?

The intercostal muscles, located between each rib, play a vital role in breathing, posture, and trunk stability. These muscles work continuously to expand and contract the rib cage with every breath you take, but they can become strained during activities involving excessive twisting, heavy lifting, forceful coughing, intense exercise, golf, tennis, or even an awkward reaching movement. When an intercostal muscle is strained or develops painful trigger points, even simple actions like taking a deep breath, coughing, sneezing, laughing, or contracting your abdominal muscles can become surprisingly painful.
At Rub Massage Austin, I use targeted therapeutic massage, trigger point therapy, and gentle myofascial techniques to help reduce muscle guarding, improve circulation, and restore mobility to the injured tissues as healing progresses. While massage cannot repair a torn muscle, it can be highly effective in relieving excessive muscle tension in the surrounding area, decreasing pain, and helping restore comfortable movement so you can breathe, move, and recover with greater ease.

What are the SCM and Scalenes of the neck?

The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and scalene muscles are two of the most overlooked muscles in the neck, yet they can have a significant impact on how you feel. Poor posture, prolonged computer work, looking down at your phone, stress, or repetitive activities can cause these muscles to become tight and develop painful trigger points. Trigger points within the SCM can refer pain into the face, jaw, temples, behind the eyes, and even contribute to tension headaches or dizziness. The scalene muscles, located deeper in the neck, lie next to the nerves of the brachial plexus as they travel into the shoulder and arm. When these muscles become excessively tight or restricted, they may contribute to compression or irritation of these nerves in some individuals, resulting in pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness radiating into the arm.

At Rub Massage Austin, I use targeted therapeutic massage, trigger point therapy, and gentle stretching techniques to restore normal muscle function, reduce tension, and improve mobility throughout the neck and shoulder complex. By addressing the underlying muscular restrictions rather than simply chasing the symptoms, many clients experience reduced pain, improved range of motion, and greater comfort in both the neck and upper extremities.

What is the anterior tibialis?

During my time working with the University of Texas men's and women's track teams, one of the muscles I treated on a regular basis was the anterior tibialis. Runners place tremendous demands on this muscle with every stride, and when it becomes overworked, it can affect the entire kinetic chain. Located along the front of the shin, this hardworking muscle is responsible for lifting the foot with every step you take, making it essential for runners, walkers, hikers, and anyone who spends long hours on their feet. When the anterior tibialis becomes overworked, develops trigger points, or goes into spasm, it can contribute to shin pain, alter your gait, and force surrounding muscles—including the calves, feet, knees, and hips—to compensate. Left untreated, these compensations can increase the risk of problems such as shin splints, foot fatigue, or even knee discomfort.
At Rub Massage Austin, I use targeted deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and assisted stretching to help restore healthy function to the anterior tibialis and the surrounding muscles. By improving circulation, reducing muscular tension, and restoring normal movement patterns, therapeutic massage not only helps relieve pain but also allows the entire lower extremity to work more efficiently, keeping you active and performing at your best.

What is the thoracolumbar aponeurosis?

The thoracolumbar aponeurosis is one of the body's most important—but often overlooked—structures when it comes to back health and efficient movement. This broad, flat tendon spans much of the lower back, serving as a central attachment point for several powerful muscles of the back, core, hips, and shoulders. It plays a vital role in transferring force between the upper and lower body during everyday activities such as walking, lifting, twisting, running, and even standing upright. When the surrounding muscles become tight, overworked, or develop trigger points, the thoracolumbar aponeurosis can lose its natural flexibility and become restricted, contributing to low back stiffness, decreased mobility, and pain that may radiate across the beltline or into the hips.
At Rub Massage Austin, therapeutic massage, deep tissue techniques, and myofascial release are used to restore mobility to the muscles and connective tissues surrounding this important structure. By reducing muscular tension, improving circulation, and encouraging the fascia and aponeurosis to glide more freely, massage therapy can help improve movement, reduce discomfort, and restore the body's ability to efficiently transfer forces between the upper and lower body—allowing you to move with greater ease and confidence.

Benefits of therapeutic touch

Therapeutic touch is far more than a luxury or a way to simply relax—it is a powerful form of healthcare that positively influences the body, mind, and nervous system. Through skilled, intentional touch, massage therapy helps reduce pain, restore healthy movement, improve circulation, calm the nervous system, and encourage the body's natural healing processes.
While many people associate massage with an occasional treat or spa experience, therapeutic massage is better viewed as a proactive investment in long-term health and wellness. Just as regular exercise strengthens the body and routine dental care prevents future problems, consistent therapeutic bodywork helps maintain healthy muscles, fascia, joints, and posture while reducing the physical effects of stress and daily wear and tear.

At Rub Massage Austin, we believe massage is more than relaxation—it's a personalized approach to helping clients move better, recover faster, and enjoy a healthier, more active life.

Massage for digestive issues

Massage therapy can have a surprisingly positive impact on digestive health by helping regulate the nervous system and reducing tension throughout the abdomen and surrounding structures. Stress is one of the most common contributors to digestive complaints, often keeping the body in a constant "fight-or-flight" state where digestion is deprioritized. Massage helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the body's "rest and digest" response—which can encourage more efficient digestive function, improved motility, and better nutrient absorption. Additionally, gentle work around the abdomen, diaphragm, low back, and hips can help reduce muscular tension that may contribute to feelings of bloating, discomfort, or abdominal tightness. Many clients report improvements in relaxation, reduced digestive stress, and an overall sense of well-being after regular massage sessions. While massage is not a treatment for digestive disorders, it can be a valuable complementary therapy that supports the body's natural digestive processes and promotes greater comfort throughout the digestive system.

What makes Rub Massage Austin different from chain studios?

At Rub Massage Austin, my focus is on providing advanced, results-driven muscular therapy rather than a one-size-fits-all massage experience. Unlike many large massage chains, where therapist turnover can be high and sessions are often standardized, I take a personalized approach built on years of experience, continuity of care, and a deep understanding of anatomy and movement.

As a Board Certified Massage Therapist with over 15 years of hands-on experience, each session is tailored to address the root cause of pain, dysfunction, or restricted movement using techniques such as deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, stretching, and range-of-motion integration. My clients aren't simply receiving a relaxing massage—they're receiving therapeutic bodywork designed to help them move better, recover faster, and achieve long-term results. The difference is individualized care from a practitioner who knows your body, understands your goals, and is committed to your progress every step of the way.
