The EPA has officially approved a novel RNA-based pesticide called Vadescana to alter genetic functions right inside honeybee colonies. This cutting-edge tool is designed to save pollinators by genetically silencing parasitic Varroa mites, yet critics warn that the technology could accidentally blindside the bees’ own genetic code across future generations. Compounding the mystery, a permanent tolerance exemption has been established, meaning invisible molecular residues are legally permitted in your honey before multi-generational data can definitively guarantee absolute human safety. To guarantee your honey is completely free of even trace biopesticide residues, prioritize buying raw, single-source honey directly from trusted local beekeepers who are willing to openly discuss their non-chemical past management practices. If in a store, look for explicitly labeled USDA Organic Honey, as organic certification strictly prohibits the use of synthetic chemicals and bio-engineered treatments within foraging zones. Avoid mass-market, blended commercial honeys that pool supply from multiple industrial apiaries, as these operations are the most likely to adopt high-tech genetic treatments to protect their bottom lines. Ultimately, the surest safeguard is to choose unfiltered, small-batch varieties from small-scale artisans who rely entirely on physical mite traps and hygienic bee genetics rather than chemical or genetic interventions.

Your brain is talking to your skeleton, and more than you probably realize. For example, doctors have long noticed something odd about people with traumatic brain injuries—their bones heal faster. When some brain cells are damaged, they release vesicles filled with proteins that travel to the bone stem cells and stimulate growth. Naturally, researchers began to wonder: If damaged brains can heal bones, can bones heal damaged brains?
To find out, researchers from Southern Medical University in China flipped the script on TBI-accelerated bone growth. They artificially caused traumatic brain injuries and strokes in the brains of mice and pigs. They then outfitted the brain-damaged animals with electronic devices that would rhythmically tap on their shin bones a couple times a second for five days.
Remarkably, it worked. According to their study recently published in Nature Neuroscience, the tapping reduced brain cell loss, promoted neuron growth, and relieved chronic inflammation. It also increased both animals’ survival time and improved their motor function and ability to navigate mazes, suggesting the process led to less memory loss.
The researchers traced the effects to a relatively large protein in bone cells called PIEZO1. This propeller-shaped protein has three spiral “blades” that curve upward surrounding an ion channel. When pressure is applied, the blades flex down and the ion channel opens, letting in positively charged signalling elements like sodium, potassium, and calcium. In their tests of animals without PIEZO1, the team found none of the healing benefits of shin tapping.
It’s a little strange, but not if you consider that bones act sort of like endocrine organs. They actively regulate mineral levels, secrete a growth factor that acts on other organs, and hormones that can lower blood glucose and boost testosterone. The endocrine system operates via feedback loops, so in a way it would be even weirder if the brain-bone axis only went one way.
But it’s still weird

Panera Bread’s corporate promise of “100% clean” food has collided with a stark reality: independent laboratory testing revealed that the chain harbored the highest levels of glyphosate among major fast-food brands tested. Consumers routinely pay a premium for Panera’s menu options under the impression that they are choosing a healthier, higher-quality alternative to traditional fast food. Yet, third-party investigations—including a prominent study that prompted consumer class-action lawsuits—discovered that a conventional whole grain bagel from Panera contained a staggering 677 parts per billion (ppb) of glyphosate. This concentration was the highest found among dozens of popular restaurants samples. The presence of this synthetic chemical—classified by international health organizations as a probable human carcinogen and heavily scrutinized for its links to endocrine disruption and neurological impacts—shatters the premium health facade of one of America’s most expensive fast-casual establishments. It exposes a deep disconnect between deceptive “greenwashed” marketing and the actual toxicity hidden within everyday grain products.

Two engineers gave the design away for free and never made a cent from it.
Richard Corsi floated the idea in August 2020, Jim Rosenthal at Tex-Air Filters in Fort Worth had one built and tested within days, and the box has carried both their names ever since. Stand four 20 by 20 inch MERV-13 furnace filters around a 20 inch box fan to make a cube, tape every seam, cap the bottom with a sheet of cardboard, and let the fan pull air in through all four walls at once. Total cost runs about 60 to 100 dollars depending on what your hardware store charges for filters, and the build takes twenty minutes with nothing sharper than a box cutter.
Four filters instead of one is the entire trick. Spreading the same airflow across four times the surface area collapses the resistance, so the fan keeps moving air instead of straining against a solid wall of pleats. Lab testing published in Aerosol Science and Technology in 2022 measured the clean air delivery rate of the box at roughly 600 to 850 cubic feet per minute, while a consumer HEPA tower costing three to five times as much typically delivers 200 to 350. MERV-13 media catches roughly half the particles in the 0.3 to 1 micron range on a single pass, and a box that pushes the whole room through itself several times an hour makes up that difference easily.
Two details separate a good build from a mediocre one. Cut a cardboard shroud that covers the outer ring of the fan blades, because that ring otherwise spins air sideways back into the room instead of pulling it through the filters. And the small arrows printed on every filter frame all have to point inward toward the fan, which is the mistake almost everyone makes on the first attempt.
It is not a beautiful object. It is as loud as a box fan on high, it looks like a school science project, and the filters want replacing roughly every six months in ordinary indoor air. During the west coast wildfire smoke of 2020, when every purifier on every shelf was sold out for weeks, school districts and clinics were taping these together by the dozen and none of that mattered to anyone.
