As I continue growing Intrigue Beauty & Fashion Boutique, Intrigue Medical Hair Solutions, and Intrigue Beauty Bar, one thing business continues to teach me is that you have to know your audience — and sometimes you have to be willing to change the entire dynamic of your business as you grow.

I’m excited about the direction I’m taking these businesses because growth sometimes means expanding beyond what you’ve always done, reaching new customers, bringing in different products and services, and making sure your business is welcoming to a broader audience. In the beauty industry especially, beauty comes in all shades, hair types, textures, styles, and backgrounds, and I want my businesses to reflect that.

Knowing your audience is also about understanding who genuinely values your business. Your ideal customers are the people who respect your prices, appreciate your service, support your growth, and understand that running a business comes with real expenses.

Being a Black-owned business does not mean my prices should automatically be negotiable or that I’m required to give discounts. Supporting a small business means respecting it as a business — not expecting the owner to constantly lower their value.

I’m learning to focus less on trying to please everybody and more on building for the customers who truly appreciate what I offer.
