One year ago, I made a decision that changed my life.
I asked for a divorce.
At the time, I thought I was breaking apart the life I was supposed to want.
I thought the traditional fairytale was the goal. Be a wife. Be a mother. Build a home. Stay. Make it work. Sacrifice. Adjust. Accept that some parts of you will have to become smaller because that’s just what life looks like when you’re married.
And for a while, I convinced myself that I was okay with it.
I told myself it was okay to miss out on things.
It was okay to put pieces of myself on the back burner.
It was okay to stop asking myself what I wanted because I had a family to think about.
Until one day, I realized I wasn't supporting the person I was becoming anymore.
And making the decision to leave didn't just change my life.
It changed my children's lives too.
They went from growing up in one household to learning how to live between two. I'm sure that broke something in all of us in different ways. There were mornings that were hard. Routines that felt unfamiliar. Moments where I questioned whether I was doing the right thing. It took strength to get up every morning and normalize a life that didn't feel normal yet.
But sometimes strength isn't staying. Sometimes strength is admitting that something isn't working anymore and having the courage to change it.
I’ve learned that change is necessary.
Growth is necessary.
And happiness is necessary.
Not the temporary kind of happiness where everything looks good from the outside. The kind where you can finally breathe. The kind where you recognize yourself again. The kind where your children can look at you and see that their mom is genuinely alive, present, and happy.
I don't want to teach my children that love means losing yourself.
I don't want them to grow up believing that you stay somewhere simply because people tell you, “that's just life.”
I don't want them to believe that being unhappy is the price you pay for being a responsible adult.
I want them to know that life is meant to be lived.
Fully.
Honestly.
On your own terms.
And if something no longer serves a healthy purpose in your life, you are allowed to change it.
You are allowed to outgrow your own standards.
You are allowed to write new ones.
You are allowed to realize that the life you once thought you wanted isn't the life you want anymore.
And you are allowed to choose again.
My children saw a version of their mom before this decision. They saw the woman who was trying to make everything work. They saw the woman who was surviving, adjusting, sacrificing, and convincing herself that she was okay. And now they get to see who I became on the other side of that decision.
They get to see why I left.
They get to see me happy.
They get to see me grow.
They get to see me build.
They get to see me take chances, create things, chase dreams, make mistakes, start over, and continue becoming a better version of myself. Maybe one day they'll understand that I didn't leave because I didn't care about my family. I left because I cared enough about all of us to stop pretending that being unhappy was the same thing as having a happy home.
A sad mother doesn't equal a happy home.
A parent who is constantly suppressing themselves doesn't automatically create a healthy environment for their children. Our children learn from what we normalize.
They learn from what we tolerate.
They learn from how we love.
They learn from how we handle change.
Most importantly, they learn from how we live. We can't constantly tell our children to be brave, chase their dreams, choose happiness, have boundaries, and become the best version of themselves while showing them that we are unwilling to do the same.
Parents are role models long before we realize they're watching.
Our energy matters.
The way we speak to ourselves matters.
The way we allow ourselves to be treated matters.
The way we choose to live matters.
Because one day, they're going to build their own lives based on the things they watched us believe we deserved. I want my children to believe they deserve a life that feels good to live. I want them to know that change isn't always something to fear.
Sometimes change is the very thing that saves you.
Sometimes starting over is not failure.
Sometimes leaving is not giving up.
Sometimes choosing yourself is the healthiest thing you can do for the people you love.
One year later, I don't look back at the woman I was with shame. I look at her with compassion. She was doing the best she knew how. But I'm proud of the woman who finally realized she was allowed to want more.
More life.
More happiness.
More freedom.
More purpose.
More of herself.
I'm even more proud that my children get to grow up watching me choose it because I don't want to just teach them how to survive life.
I want to show them how to LIVE it.

You’re allowed to change.
You’re allowed to outgrow the standards you once held yourself to and create new ones that actually reflect who you are becoming. You’re allowed to change your mind, change your direction, and figure it all out as you go.
You don’t have to have everything mapped out. You don’t have to keep living by rules you’ve already outgrown just because they once made sense to you.
Growth is realizing that the life you wanted before may not be the life you want now — and that’s okay.
You’re allowed to live life on your own terms. To make mistakes. To start over. To choose differently. To become someone your past self wouldn’t even recognize.
Because life isn’t about living exactly the way you were told to.
It’s about living, learning, evolving, and becoming.
Less living by what you were taught. More living by what you discover along the way.

Me: Kiss your girlfriend for $100 or the most beautiful girl in the world for $1 mill.
Ryan: I’d go with the obvious. I’m going for the one mil.
Me: Okay…. 🥲 SO YOU RATHER KISS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL OVER YOUR GIRLFRIEND?
Ryan: You’re the most beautiful girl.
…Fine, pass. Next question 😌
