When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE, many residents of Pompeii ran toward the city gates and the sea. Others hesitated. Some believed the tremors and falling ash would pass, as smaller quakes had before. For a few, the instinct was not to flee, but to hide and wait. Excavations in recent years at the site of Pompeii uncovered the remains of a man and a woman inside a partially destroyed building. Archaeologists found them in a room that appeared to have been used as shelter. Nearby were coins, pieces of jewellery, and iron keys. The objects suggest they gathered valuables before seeking refuge, possibly intending to leave once the danger subsided. By the time they hid, ash and pumice had already been falling for hours. Many inhabitants initially survived this phase by staying indoors. The real devastation came later, when powerful pyroclastic flows surged down the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. These clouds of superheated gas, ash, and volcanic debris moved at high speed, reaching temperatures capable of killing instantly. The pair did not escape. Their bodies were preserved in the hardened ash, a process that allowed modern researchers to reconstruct their final positions. The keys remained clenched in one hand. The jewellery and coins were still beside them, untouched for nearly two thousand years.
