How old were you when your hair became your own job?

Not when you wanted it to be โ€” when it actually happened.

Mine was eleven. My mother worked doubles and one Sunday she just handed me the comb and said figure it out. I butchered it for about two years. Some of the worst damage I ever did to my own head happened in that window, and nobody was doing it to me. I was doing it to myself, with no idea what I was doing.

I think about that a lot now, watching parents decide when to hand it over.

How old were you? And do you think it was the right time?

The crying isn't about the tangles. It's about the order.

Most of us were taught to start at the root and pull the comb down. That's the fastest way to turn one knot into a handful of broken hair โ€” and to teach a child that hair time hurts.

The order that actually works:

1. WET IT. Detangling dry hair is where breakage happens. Spray bottle, soak it through.
2. SLIP BEFORE TOOLS. Herbal Moisturizing Conditioner & Leave-In, $15. Be generous โ€” you want it slippery before anything touches it.
3. FOUR SECTIONS. Clip three away. A whole head at once overwhelms both of you.
4. ENDS FIRST. Start at the bottom two inches and work UP toward the root. Never down.
5. FINGERS, THEN TOOL. Detangling Brush, $22. Your fingers find the knot, the brush finishes the row.

Tangles live at the ends. Start there and the root work is almost nothing.

What age did hair time stop being a fight at your house?

Heads up: fall is dry-air season, and friction is the silent edge thief. Satin bonnet at night (the long version fits braids and locs), satin pillowcase as backup for the nights the bonnet escapes โ€” we all know those nights. Both are in the shop and the machine. What's your bonnet-retention rate โ€” does yours make it to morning?

09/08/2026

Honest question, no judgment: whose kids are actually sleeping in a bonnet?

Bedtime is already a whole production, I know. But the bonnet is the cheapest thing in the entire routine and it saves you the most work. Twelve dollars versus twenty extra minutes of detangling every single morning.

Our Long Satin Bonnet is oversized on purpose โ€” braids, locs, and thick hair all fit, and it actually stays on til morning.

Drop a ๐ŸŒ™ if bonnets are locked in at your house. Drop a ๐Ÿ˜… if you're still fighting that battle. I'll take both.

Prep Season is underway, and I'm building the rest of the month around what you actually need.

Still to come: scalp care under styles, moisture versus protein, takedown without the loss, and how to switch your routine for fall air.

So what's missing? What's the hair question you've been quietly Googling at 1 AM and never getting a straight answer to?

Drop it below. I'm reading every one of these, and the most-asked ones become posts. ๐ŸŒฟ

Sunday sit-down: who taught YOU to do hair? A grandmother, a big cousin, YouTube University at 2am? Shout them out below โ€” hair knowledge in our community is an inheritance, and somebody deserves their flowers today.

Saturday night. Are you prepping your hair, or going to bed on it and dealing with it tomorrow?

I'm not judging. Some Saturdays I do the whole routine. Some Saturdays the bonnet goes on over whatever is happening up there and I make peace with Sunday-morning me.

But if you've got five minutes: spray bottle, leave-in, buttercream on the ends, twist it up, bonnet. That's it. Sunday-morning you will be so grateful.

Which one are you tonight โ€” full routine, or bonnet and pray? ๐ŸŒ™

Sunday reset question: summer taught us all something about our hair. What's ONE habit you're carrying into fall โ€” and one you're leaving behind? (Mine: keeping the weekly scalp oiling, leaving behind the tight buns. My edges deserve peace.) โ€” Nikki

Braid season is officially open โ€” what are you getting done this weekend?

Knotless? Passion twists? Locs retwist? Faux locs? Cornrows and calling it a day?

And the follow-up question I actually care about: did you prep, or are you walking into that chair on week-three hair and hoping for the best?

No shame either way, I've done both. Tell me what you're getting and I'll tell you exactly what to do the night before. ๐ŸŒฟ
