When Accountability Gets Real
HEADLINER: I walked into our second Board meeting nervous. I walked out knowing that The Shea House has no option but to grow.
On Saturday, 22 August 2026, I walked up the small footpath at Kara Space to attend The Shea House’s second Board meeting — and I must confess, my nerves were frayed.
We were presenting our half-year performance and, more importantly, the commercial architecture that will drive our next phase of growth — work that was co-funded by SHONA. That support has enabled us to take a much more deliberate look at how we build a stronger, commercially sustainable business while staying true to our impact.
As I prepared to face our Board — Barbara Teddy Arimi, our Chairperson, Moses Engwau, Joseph Kaggwa, Lucy Asiimwe and Betty Mwagale — I felt the weight of their trust.
These are accomplished professionals who have graciously chosen to give us something incredibly valuable: their time, expertise and belief in what we are building.
Luke 12:48 came to mind:
“From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be expected.”
That scripture hit differently that morning.
One of my biggest lessons from my year at the School of Practical Business was that growth does not happen accidentally. It requires intentionality, accountability and good governance.
That lesson pushed me to constitute a Board for The Shea House — not simply to tick a corporate governance box, but to surround the business with people who would challenge our thinking, strengthen our decisions and hold me accountable for the results we say we want to achieve.
And this Board has given us that — and more.
Their commitment has made one thing very clear to me:
We have no option but to grow.
We have been entrusted with too much — by our Board, our team, our customers, partners like SHONA, and the communities from whom we source our Nilotica shea.
As our second Board meeting ended, my mind was already racing through the numbers we must deliver before our final Board meeting of 2026.
So I’ll end this reflection with an ask.
We are ready for bigger markets.
