What’s the difference between a whitehead and milia?

Knowing which one you have changes how it should be treated.

Whiteheads and milia may look similar, but they are different skin concerns.

A whitehead (closed comedone) is a type of acne that forms when oil, dead skin cells, and debris become trapped inside a blocked pore. They may remain small and closed or become inflamed over time.

A milium is a small, firm, keratin-filled cyst that forms beneath the skin’s surface. Unlike whiteheads, milia are not acne and do not contain oil.

Because they form differently, treatment is different too.

👉🏽 Whiteheads may respond to topical retinoids, chemical exfoliation, and medical-grade skincare suited to your skin.
👉🏽 Milia may improve with retinoids and exfoliation but often require professional extraction using sterile techniques.
