1st Lt. Gen. Paul Malong is a South Sudanese military commander and politician who served as the Chief of General Staff of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) from April 2014 to May 2017. Born in 1962 in Warawar, Aweil East, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, he joined the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) in 1984 after participating in the early organization of the Anyanya II movement. He received officer training in Ethiopia and served in several frontline operations during the Second Sudanese Civil War, rising through the ranks to become one of the SPLA's senior commanders.

General Paul Malong was promoted to zonal commander for Northern Bahr el Ghazal in the early 1990s following the death of the zonal commander, Commander Luka Lual Riiny. Malong served as a zonal commander for Aweil until the peace agreement was signed in 2005. He fought many successful battles against the enemy in Bahr el Ghazal. After the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, he was appointed in 2005 as deputy of the director of the National Security Service of South Sudan, while General Dr. Majak Agoo Atem was the director of the National Security of South Sudan.

In March 2008, he was appointed governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State. In 2010, he won the gubernatorial seat and became the elected governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal. Gen. Malong played a field commander’s role when the war broke out in Juba following the SPLM convention in December 2013.

In April 2014, President Salva Kiir appointed him Chief of General Staff, making him the highest-ranking military officer in the SPLA and the principal military adviser to the President and the National Security Council. He held the position until May 2017, when he was relieved of his duties.

Following his removal, Lt. Gen. Malong was briefly placed under government confinement before being allowed to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, for medical treatment. In April 2018, he announced the formation of the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A), an armed opposition movement. Throughout his military and political career, Paul Malong has remained one of the most influential and controversial figures in South Sudan's modern history. πŸ’ͺ✊
