School of Law Oratory Club Holds Memorial Legal Debate in Honor of Former Students

The School of Law Oratory Club (SLOC) is hosting the Majok Majok Riing & Pei Chan Memorial Legal Debates Competition under the theme, โ€œRespect for the Rule of Law and Human Rights in South Sudan.โ€

The competition is held in memory of Majok Majok Riing and Pei Chan, both former students of the School of Law at the University of Juba, who passed away in 2025 and 2026 respectively.

Majok Majok Riing died on 17 July 2025, while Pei Chan passed away on 26 March 2026.

The debate aims to give law students a platform to express their ideas with confidence and clarity, challenge different perspectives, defend the truth, and promote justice and human rights.

The organizers say the competition is also intended to inspire young legal minds to uphold the principles of justice, humanity, and responsible leadership.

The event is guided by the motto:

โ€œJustice, Humanity, Leadership โ€” Our Compass.โ€

JUSTICE CHAN REECH MADUT!

Justice Chan Reec Madut is a prominent South Sudanese jurist who served as Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of South Sudan from August 2011 to May 2025. Before independence, he served as Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Southern Sudan and Legal Adviser to senior government officials. He is from Aguok Kuei, Gogrial West County (Gogrial Akuol Akuith community ) .

Madut became nationally prominent through his role in the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, serving as Deputy Chairperson and Chairperson of the Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau. He helped oversee preparations and administration of the historic January 2011 referendum, in which an overwhelming majority of Southern Sudanese voted for independence.

Following independence on 9 July 2011, President Salva Kiir appointed Madut Chief Justice on 15 August 2011. He led the judiciary through South Sudan's formative years, including civil conflict, peace processes and judicial reform efforts. His tenure focused on strengthening courts, improving access to justice and developing judicial institutions in a newly independent country.

His leadership also faced criticism concerning judicial appointments, transparency, political neutrality and judicial independence. These remain subjects of debate.

On 28 May 2025, President Kiir removed Madut from office and appointed Justice Dr. Benjamin Baak Deng as his successor. Madut remains historically significant for both his referendum role and long leadership of South Sudan's Supreme Court.
