One thing I’ve learned after years of installing locs is that people spend too much time debating the method and not enough time discussing the technique.
Whether someone starts with braids, twists, or another approved starter method, the real question should be:
Was it installed correctly?
A long-lasting set of locs starts with Clean, consistent parting, Proper sizing for the client’s hair density, Balanced tension meaning not too tight, not too loose, a strong foundation that supports healthy locs over time and a loctician who understands how hair behaves throughout the locking process.
A method doesn’t automatically create healthy locs. The person performing the service does.
I’ve seen incredible results from different starter methods, and I’ve also seen poor results from those same methods when the technique wasn’t there.
Instead of asking, “What method did you use?” start asking, Was the foundation solid?
Was the installation customized for the client’s hair? Does the loctician understand long term loc health? Can they produce consistent results?
Technique is what determines the outcome. The method is simply the tool. The loctician’s skill is what makes the difference.
