THE PROBLEMS
At the community level where honey is harvested bees settle in hollow tree trunks or anthills, or sometimes the villagers fabricate hives made of straws. In either case, to harvest the honey, villagers set fire to the hives, killing nearly all the bees including the queen. This leads to drop in bee population, drop in the pollination rate, drop in the amount of wild fruits, leading to animals migrating to find food in neighboring countries where they are hunted and killed. The honey absorbs excess smoke and becomes dark in color, honey spills and some comb break in the hollow trunk. Honey is harvested in darkness with the aid of lighted straws, ashes from which drops into the honey. The honey comb is carried in open bowls from the harvesting site and the honey is squeezed out of the comb using old nets and hammocks and the wax thrown away. OUR SOLUTIONS
Work with beekeepers, hire and train agents
Introduce 8-10 frame reusable langstroth bee hives
Supervise honey harvesting and buy honey right after harvesting
Conduct public education on the importance of bees
Increase the number of reusable hives
Process honey in a clean and hygienic and secured shed, using improved (imported) equipment
Bottle the honey in 250,300 and 450 gram jars with attractive labels and nutritional information, contacts, page, website and other social media
Package bottles in transparent reusable carriers/cartons
Promote honey, targeting the Chinese, hotels, food stores and supermarkets country-wide using flyers, one-on-one, groups, office to office etc. Demonstrate the different uses of natural honey, process the wax and sell to gara, batik and leather industries.
