Your body has a setting it only uses in water.

In 1963, physiologist Per Scholander described a natural defense against asphyxia found across vertebrate animals, triggered the moment the face enters cold water. He called it the Master Switch of Life, but his research was mostly in the lab.

Erika Schagatay, a Swedish physiologist, took it into the real world, studying the Ama divers of Japan and the sea nomads of Southeast Asia. Her work showed the reflex can be trained.

When it activates, the spleen releases stored red blood cells, and she measured how much that extends the time a diver can stay underwater on a single breath. Scholander saw a reflex. Erika found a trainable mechanism.

It isn't something we developed. It's inherited, which is why we share it with seals, dolphins and whales; they run the same machinery, only far better.

Most of your body's automatic functions, heart rate, digestion, body temperature, run outside your control.

Breathing is different. It happens on its own, but you can take conscious control of it anytime.

That difference matters. Fast, shallow breathing doesn't just follow stress, it triggers your fight-or-flight response, even without a real threat, raising your heart rate. And the opposite is also true: slow your breathing and prolong your exhale, and you can consciously bring your heart rate back down by stimulating your vagus nerve.

This isn't limited to moments of tension. Even at rest, your heart rate rises slightly with every inhale and falls with every exhale, a pattern called respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Your breath and heart are wired together, breath by breath, every day.

A 2021 study found that just one 5-minute session of slow breathing with a longer exhale measurably increased vagal activity and reduced anxiety, in both younger and older adults.

Your breath is the one system in your body you have agency over. Use it.

Children breathe through their mouths for good reasons. A cold, allergies, enlarged tonsils. The problem is that the reason resolves, and the habit doesn't.

In one study, researchers 3D-scanned the faces of 4,784 fifteen-year-olds. Those whose parents had reported snoring or mouth breathing since infancy had longer faces, jaws sitting further back, and altered nasal dimensions.

And it starts earlier than that. In a cross-sectional study of 1,616 children aged 3 to 6, mouth breathing was linked to open bite, crossbite, and teeth pushed forward.

One quick test at home: ask your child to drink a glass of water. If it swirls around the mouth before going down, the tongue and lips are working harder than they should.

Your stress response was built to keep you alive in the middle of the savanna, not to answer emails and texts sitting in your chair.

Our founder, Anders Olsson, explains the mismatch. A thousand years ago, danger was obvious, and so was the moment it passed. You saw the threat, your body engaged the fight or flight response, flooding you with energy to either fight or run, and once it was over, it calmed down on its own.

Today the tiger looks like an email, a meeting, or a conversation that feels difficult to have. Same physical response, tense muscles, a rush of adrenaline, a faster heart rate, shallow breathing, but no physical activity to burn that energy and no clear moment when the danger ends. So your body just stays there, accumulating stress without ever winding down.

Almost everything in that stress response runs on autopilot, except your breathing. That's the one function you can consciously control and change anytime.

Start small. Just three to five minutes of low, slow, and rhythmic breathing, calm and relaxed, through your nose, is enough to begin shifting that pattern.

The easiest way in: close your mouth, rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth, and simply prolong your exhale. See how a small change like that can put the brakes on a stress response that never got the memo to stop.

This is one of our founder Anders Olsson's favorite ways to explain it: your body is like a car, more fuel doesn't mean better performance.

Overbreathing doesn't give you more oxygen. At rest, your blood is already close to fully saturated. What overbreathing actually does is blow off COâ‚‚, and that's where performance suffers. COâ‚‚ is what allows oxygen to release from your blood into your muscles and cells, a process called the Bohr effect. Too little of it, and oxygen stays locked onto your blood instead of reaching the tissues that actually need it.

COâ‚‚ protects you in another way too, the same way rust forms on metal or a cut apple browns when exposed to air, oxidation happens inside your body. Losing COâ‚‚ leaves your cells more exposed to that same oxidative damage.

More oxygen was never the goal. The right balance was.

Your breathing changes the biochemistry of your body. That sounds like an overstatement until you look at the numbers.

While hyperventilating with normal air, the medical students experienced an increase of 360% in adrenaline and 151% in noradrenaline. When breathing COâ‚‚-enriched air, adrenaline and noradrenaline remained unchanged.

That's the part that matters: the COâ‚‚ drop wasn't just raising platelet levels, it was triggering the same chemistry your body uses under stress.

Most people assume the urge to breathe comes from low oxygen. It doesn't.

Your blood oxygen levels normally sit between 95 and 98%, so your body already has what it needs. Instead, it's your brain's COâ‚‚ receptors that decide when you take your next breath.

When those receptors are overly sensitive, even a normal amount of COâ‚‚ can feel like too much. You may feel short of air sooner than you actually are, and end up breathing faster and shallower than you need, often without noticing.

That sensitivity can be retrained. Nasal breathing and taping your mouth at night are two of the simplest ways to start, not as a one-time fix, but as a daily habit your brain adapts to over time.

Ever notice stress makes you breathe faster, but that only makes you feel worse? Here's what's actually happening.

When your brain senses danger, it activates your sympathetic nervous system, your body's stress response. Your breathing speeds up to prepare your muscles to run or fight.

But when there's no real danger to run from, that response goes into overdrive. You breathe out too much COâ‚‚, which raises your blood's pH (respiratory alkalosis) and makes it harder for oxygen to release from your blood into your cells and tissues.

The result: a racing heart, a tight chest, tingling fingers, lightheadedness. Your brain reads these signals as more danger. Stress rises. Breathing quickens. The loop continues.

You can't directly slow your heart. But you can directly slow your breath.

Slow nasal breathing restores your COâ‚‚ levels and directly increases vagal tone, the signal that tells your nervous system it's safe. As that signal lands, your body feels safe and out of danger, and the loop breaks.

Your breath is both the trigger and the release.

Do you think stress just changes how you feel? It actually changes your biology.

Our founder Anders explains it with a simple comparison. When you get a fever, your body doesn't just feel warmer, your internal thermostat resets, from 37 degrees to 38.5 or higher.

Your breathing works the same way. Deep in your brainstem, a control center sets your tolerance for COâ‚‚, the gas that actually triggers your next breath. When that tolerance drops, your body reaches its trigger point faster, and without you choosing it, your breathing speeds up.

Faster breathing clears even more COâ‚‚, which keeps that tolerance low. It's a loop your body creates, then reinforces.

But that loop runs both ways. Slow, low and rhythmic breathing through your nose lets COâ‚‚ build back up gradually, and over time the exposure to that COâ‚‚ makes your control center raise your tolerance.
