🔹History: working female Saker falcon, 5 years old, wild-caught, has been laying eggs; never previously examined; body condition score 5, weight 1,400 g.
According to the owner, she had trichomoniasis twice in the past, which he treated on his own. Her condition recently deteriorated-she developed severe wheezing, dyspnea, and stopped eating. She passed away upon arrival at the clinic.
🔹Necropsy findings: Fibrinous pneumonia, fibrinous helminthic airsacculitis (Serratospiculum seurati), necrotizing ingluvitis (associated with trichomoniasis), oophoritis, and hepatitis. Serratospiculiasis is a parasitic disease caused by filarial nematodes of the Serratospiculum genus.
It can lead to aspergillosis and secondary bacterial infections.
In captivity, it is transmitted through ingestion of infected beetles or other insects.

🐹 Why Is Breed Knowledge Important for Veterinarians?
🔹 Although all domestic guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) belong to the same species, different breeds have distinct coat characteristics, body types, and genetic traits that may influence health risks, clinical examination, and husbandry requirements.
🔹 Knowledge of breed-associated conditions helps veterinarians recognize potential health problems earlier and provide appropriate preventive care. For example, long-haired breeds are more prone to coat matting and soiling, while Satin guinea pigs may be predisposed to fibrous osteodystrophy. Hairless guinea pigs also require particular attention to skin health and thermoregulation.
🔹 Understanding breed characteristics helps veterinarians tailor clinical examinations, nutritional and husbandry recommendations, and client education to each patient’s needs. This supports early disease recognition, improves welfare, and promotes individualized veterinary care.

⚠️The main contraindications or precautions include:
🔹Suspected or confirmed gastrointestinal obstruction

🐢 The box turtle shell is much more than a protective “box”!
Box turtles (Terrapene) have a hinged, bilobed plastron that allows them to retract their head and limbs and close the shell almost completely. The shell is an integral part of the skeleton, made of bone covered by keratinized scutes, with living, vascularized and innervated tissues beneath them.
⚠️ Should you force a closed shell open? No. Excessive force can cause injury to the shell and surrounding tissues. During veterinary examination, gentle, species-appropriate restraint should be used, and sedation or anesthesia may be appropriate when adequate examination or treatment cannot otherwise be performed safely.

🩺🔬Not every mass is cancer! Understanding the differences between benign and malignant neoplasms helps:
🔹assess tumor behavior
🔹choose appropriate diagnostic tests
🔹plan treatment and discuss prognosis.
Features such as cellular differentiation, tumor margins, growth pattern, metastatic potential and recurrence risk provide important clues, but cytology and histopathology are essential for definitive diagnosis.

Long-eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus)
👂 Those huge ears are their trademark! Their ears are much larger than those of many other hedgehog species and may help with heat dissipation.
🌙 They are nocturnal. Long-eared hedgehogs are most active at night and can travel several kilometres while searching for food.
🏜 They are adapted to dry habitats. They occur in steppes, semi-deserts and deserts across parts of Europe and Asia.
🪹 They are excellent diggers. They make their own burrows or use abandoned burrows of other small mammals.
🐛 Their diet is mainly animal-based. Insects and other invertebrates are important food items, but they may also eat eggs, fruits and small vertebrates.
🦂 They can eat surprisingly large prey. Their diet may include scorpions, lizards and even small snakes.
👃 Their senses are highly developed. Hearing and smell are particularly important for locating prey and detecting danger at night.
🦔 They are solitary animals. Adults generally live and forage alone, coming together mainly during the breeding season.

Gastric Trichobezoar in a Galago 🐒
A 13-year-old female galago (960 g) was diagnosed with a large gastric trichobezoar during routine examination, confirmed by ultrasound and radiography, despite the absence of vomiting or other clinical complaints. Gastrotomy was performed to remove the hairball, with multimodal anaesthesia, analgesia, antimicrobial therapy and fluid support, and the patient is now recovering.
