At the Maude Abbott Medical Museum, inside McGill University in Montreal, there is a specimen that no one forgets after seeing it.
It is the actual trachea of a child who was just 2 and a half years old. It was carefully opened along the back so that exactly what happened could be seen: a peanut lodged right where the airway divides toward the two lungs, completely sealing off the passage of air. According to the museum's records, the child's lungs were perfectly healthy. The problem was never the child's health; it was the size of his own airway.
Doctors explain that in children under 4, this passage can be as narrow as a little finger, and they still do not have the molars needed to properly crush hard foods. All it takes is laughing, crying, or running while eating for something as ordinary as a peanut to end up where it should not. That is why pediatricians have continued repeating the same advice for generations: no whole nuts, seeds, or popcorn before age 4.
