Properties of water. Archimedes’ principle

The buoyancy of water “pushes” the body to the surface. An Ancient Greek engineer and scholar Archimedes had discovered this Law. The upward, or buoyant, force on the body is stronger than the downward force. There are some exceptions, but is rare.
This is such good news for those who have a fear of water. If one’s body doesn’t sink as a stone, it floats. It means it is impossible for them to drown.

There are exceptions. If a person is overly muscular, then the downward force is stronger than the uplifting force.

And yes, in this case the athlete will sink.
The bad news is in order to stay afloat one must hold their breath, fully submerge and relax.

Tony MacGuinness, an Irish and British Olympic swimming coach has published a post about “aquatic signature”. It is all down to how water and an individual “communicate”. Staying relaxed or keeping a particular body position but without tension, one goes through a process of "feeling" the water with the knowledge that their weight is supported by the water. Thanks to its properties, water can offer mind-blowing freedom which allows one to learn how to manage this freedom.
The conclusion to make here is that one has to learn to be fully relaxed while being submerged. This way they can learn to feel confident in water which is important to efficiently learn how to swim.

Also, there is great news for those who suffer from pains in their back and joints as a result of gravity. Thanks to buoyancy and swimming being a low-impact activity, it is the most suitable way to stay fit and healthy.

Can you relax in water so that you can feel weightless and as though you are in space?

The swimming drill has been learnt, but the fear of water is still there. This can be the case when a person can easily cover a distance but is afraid to stop in the middle because they cannot touch the pool bottom and which induce panic.

Why does this happen?

I feel sure a lot of swimming teachers share the same opinion – a shallow pool is the only option to teach brand new swimmers, especially when they have a fear of water.

However. I have a different opinion and therefore use a different approach to this problem.

There are many who are lucky enough to work in a shallow pool, but what about those swimming teachers for whom the only option is a deep pool? In this case it boils down to the teacher’s adaptability and application of skills, the swimming programme will definitely be different depending on the dimensions of the pool.
That's exactly what happened to me in Qatar. I had to create a swimming programme for beginners for a deep swimming pool. It took some time and effort to convince the management that the students had to learn to rely on themselves and not on a trainer to support them under their chest.

The most important part of my online swimming course programme is becoming sufficiently confident in water.
What is meant by “becoming sufficiently confident in water”?
Firstly breathing, when a person is fully submerged, they are supposed to either hold their breath or exhale. In this case the water won't get into the nose and the mouth which eliminates panic.

Secondly, an ability to relax so that the water will be “pushing” the body to the surface. During that short period of time, the head can be lifted out of water, take a breath in, followed by submerging, relaxation, exhalation, before the body is pushed up again. This is the breathing rhythm used when swimming.

Thirdly, the correct arm and leg movements which will allow an individual to easily stay afloat and/or move through the water without the need to make contact with the pool bottom.

Fourthly, the ability to relax in a supine position as well as any body position.

It is after mastering the above skills that it's time to start learning how to swim.

How did you learn how to swim? What was the depth of the pool?

Properties of the water. What you need to know about water in order to master swimming?

Once you enter water, a human body’s reaction to the environment changes, as well as its habitual mechanisms of movements. It gets harder to move through it and it feels uneasy to lose the contact between the feet and a solid base. It happens because:

Drag (or resistance) is one of the water properties which affects movement through it. As soon as we get in water, we cannot do it freely the same way we’re so used to move on land. For example, a runner covers the same distance on land much faster than a swimmer in the water.

Nevertheless, athletes and their coaches are still in search of reducing body resistance in order to increase their speed. Practically, it means the constant honing of the swimming technique.

While for the beginners in swimming, learning how to reduce the water resistance will help to preserve their energy during the process.

As a swimming trainer, I teach my students to put themselves in the most efficient (horizontal) position so that they move through water with less drag and, therefore, less effort.

As an aqua aerobics trainer, I teach my participants how to get the best of the water resistance to benefit from the classes the most.

So, the first thing a beginner will face while in water is drag or water resistance. I will tell you about some other properties of water in my next post.

Have you ever thought about the fact that it’s harder to move through water than on land? If so, what did you feel?

Ethnic Caucasians tend to have some natural difficulties in swimming, but when one has a desire to learn how to swim, the right approach is extremely helpful.

For example, in this situation (the video). The student is 26, Azerbaijani and facing the following difficulties learning to swim:

1. With taking a breath in after exhaling in the water,
2. With the technical ex*****on of the arms and legs,
3. With breathing, arm and leg work integration,
4. With staying afloat, because of his body type he tends to sink.

It’s feasible to start teaching using the swimming drill where free-style legs and breaststroke arms are combined. (You can find more details about this drill in ienjoyswimming.com - personal blog, My favourite swimming drill). However, the student's free style leg movement isn’t totally technically correct and sufficient at the moment and does not allow him to keep horizontal position, keep balanced and doesn’t provide more or less noticeable momentum. That is the reason why the kick breaststroke has been introduced to him earlier.

It is possible to start teaching with the breaststroke, (i.e. the breaststroke leg kick) early on in the programmes and this case is no exception. Firstly, because of the uniqueness of the stroke, it is the only stroke where the arms and legs do not move at the same time, which partly solves the student’s problem with the integration of the different swimming elements, plus, according to him, it is more comfortable for him to swim breaststroke.

Let’s hope is that my student is determined and patient enough to master swimming.

Whether a student is learning or improving their swimming technique with a qualified trainer or on their own, self-sensing and focus points are the guidelines to do so.

When my student (in the video) first came to me he described his swimming as “moving heavy stones through water”, (self-sensing).

As always, I used different swimming drills to diversify the sessions and also, we worked on focus points of the arm stroke in the free style. By the end of session three my student started to describe his free style technique as “swimming with power and speed” and this is an enjoyable and encouraging way to swim.

In my opinion my student is swimming more gracefully and naturally now and he definitely has to practice further because “Perfect practice makes perfect”.
