Uleiul de argan este cunoscut și folosit de secole de către femeile berbere din Maroc pentru îngrijire corporală (uz extern), dar și ca aliment valoros.
El a devenit din ce în ce mai cunoscut în restul lumii abia în ultimele câteva decenii. Ca semn de înaltă apreciere, în anul 1999 UNESCO a recunoscut și clasat arborele de argan ca patrimoniu mondial.
