Germany's Cold War border vanished from the map in 1990, but the 2025 election results show the exact same line still splitting the country's politics, just with different names on the map. Before reunification, Germany was split into two countries entirely. West Germany aligned with the United States and built a market economy under NATO protection. East Germany was governed by the Soviet-backed German Democratic Republic, with a state-controlled economy and no free elections. The two halves reunified in 1990, and technically became one country under one government. But the February 2025 federal election revealed how much of that old divide is still there underneath the surface. The CDU/CSU won the country overall with 28.5% of the vote, and Friedrich Merz is set to become chancellor. The real story though was the AfD, a party skeptical of the EU and focused heavily on immigration, which came in second nationally with 20.8%, more than doubling its previous result. In the five states that made up former East Germany, the AfD did not just do well, it became the strongest party outright, winning as much as 38% in some regions, while remaining far weaker across most of the former West. Political analysts point to several overlapping factors behind this divide, including persistent economic gaps between east and west since reunification, higher unemployment in eastern regions, and many eastern voters reporting they feel unheard by politicians in Berlin, particularly on immigration policy. Others point to differing historical experiences with democracy, since West Germans had over 40 years of democratic tradition before reunification that East Germans did not.
