Things You Should Avoid If You Have an Ulcer

If you have a stomach ulcer, avoiding certain foods and habits can help reduce irritation and support healing.

1. Spicy foods – Pepper, chili, and very spicy sauces can worsen symptoms in some people.

2. Alcohol – It irritates the stomach lining and can delay healing.

3. Smoking – Smoking slows ulcer healing and increases the risk of recurrence.

4. Painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen – These can damage the stomach lining. Only take them if your healthcare provider advises you to.

5. Too much coffee or caffeinated drinks – They may increase stomach discomfort in some people.

6. Carbonated (soft) drinks – They can cause bloating and worsen symptoms.

7. Highly acidic foods – Citrus fruits, tomatoes, and vinegar-based foods may trigger pain in some people.

8. Fried and fatty foods – These can slow digestion and increase discomfort.

9. Skipping meals or eating very late – Regular, smaller meals are often easier on the stomach.

10. Excessive stress – While stress doesn't usually cause ulcers, it can make symptoms feel worse.

If your ulcer is caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, it's important to complete the full course of treatment prescribed by your healthcare provider.
