💡Trivia:
On July 24, 1534, French explorer Jacques Cartier arrived in the Gaspé Bay and planted a large cross, claiming the territory in the name of the King of France.
It is also during these early voyages that Cartier heard local Indigenous people use the word kanata (a St. Lawrence Iroquoian word meaning "village" or "settlement"). Cartier adopted this word to name the entire surrounding region, which eventually became "Canada".
