MANILA, Philippines — School leaders, educational policy experts, and advocates gathered at the Bayview Park Hotel Manila on September 16–17 for the Principals Circle of the Philippines (P*P) 2026 Annual Convention. Centered on the theme "Leading Future-Ready Schools: Building Safe, Caring, and Resilient Learning Communities," the two-day event provided actionable strategies to transform Philippine learning environments in response to modern educational challenges.

The convention opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. Rose Marie Salazar-Clemeña, President of Asian Psychological Services and Assessment, Inc. (APSA), setting the stage for PHINMA Education Chief Learning Officer Mr. Francis "Franz" Larios, who delivered a visionary keynote address on fostering resilient learning communities. Reacting to the keynote, Mr. Rex Wallen Tan delivered an insightful talk introducing APSA’s Mental Well-being Inventory, offering practical, data-driven solutions to support schools amidst today's pressing safety and mental health concerns.

The first day continued with Dr. Ebenezer A. Beloy, OIC, Director III of the Bureau of Curriculum Development, who outlined key updates on MATATAG implementation and the transition to a three-term school calendar. Over the lunch break, attendees tuned into a presentation from Major Sponsor Teachmint Technologies Inc, showcasing innovative tools to support school operations and digital management. Afternoon sessions featured DepEd NCR Education Program Supervisor Mr. Andrew E. Tan exploring the future of AI and digital instructional management, followed by a short presentation during the afternoon break by Sponsor BrainFit Studio Philippines. ISO 21001 Consultant Mr. Arnold Z. David rounded out the day by detailing updated ISO 21001:2025 standards for educational management systems.

Day 2 shifted focus toward learner safety, well-being, and community support. Mr. Noel Ison, Jr. of Alpha 3 Crisis Management opened the morning by sharing crucial frameworks for emergency preparedness, risk management, and learner protection. Following this, Deputy Privacy Commissioner Atty. Jose Amelito S. Belarmino II addressed key strategies for creating safe digital spaces, focusing on data privacy, cyberbullying, and social media risks. Afternoon sessions featured Dr. Salazar-Clemeña leading a deep dive into Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to build inclusive, caring classrooms, and Dr. Marie Vic F. Suarez, Principal at Southville International School and Colleges, discussing ways to strengthen school-family relationships in a changing educational landscape. The two-day gathering concluded with an inspiring awards ceremony and photo opportunity, honoring educators dedicated to shaping resilient and forward-looking school communities.

Denmark has become widely known for building empathy and social understanding into school life from an early age.

One practice often highlighted is Klassens tid, or “the class’s hour,” where students spend time discussing problems within the class, relationships and challenges they may be experiencing.

The sessions are designed to encourage students to listen to one another, understand different perspectives and work through problems together rather than simply leaving conflicts unresolved.

The idea has attracted international attention because Denmark has long placed significant emphasis on student well-being and cooperative learning alongside traditional academic subjects.

But claims that every Danish student aged 6 to 16 is legally required to take a dedicated one-hour “empathy class” every week are often simplified online.

Klassens tid is a real and longstanding Danish school tradition, but how it is organized can vary between schools, and it is broader than a formal subject devoted only to empathy.

Denmark also has relatively low reported levels of bullying compared with many countries, but researchers cannot attribute that outcome to one classroom practice alone.

School culture, anti-bullying programs, teacher involvement, family support and broader social conditions all contribute.

Still, the Danish approach has influenced other countries.

France, for example, cited Denmark when introducing structured empathy lessons as part of its own effort to address bullying in schools.

The broader idea is simple:

Reading and mathematics teach children how to understand information.

Schools can also deliberately create time for them to understand one another.
