Managing diabetes means more than just blood sugar. Chronic high blood sugar silently damages tiny blood vessels in your ear, starving delicate hearing nerves. This can lead to high-frequency hearing loss, impacting conversations before you even notice. Protect your hearing: manage blood sugar and get a baseline check.

Hearing loss doesn't always begin with complete silence. It often starts subtly, with family mentioning the TV volume or you finding yourself leaning in during conversations. Addressing it involves a clear path: identifying the cause, getting tested, and exploring the right technology.

There is a particular kind of quiet that creeps into a family. The parent or grandparent who used to lead the stories starts to just sit and smile. We call it age, or tiredness, or moodiness. Often, it is hearing loss. When keeping up with a noisy table takes too much effort, staying silent feels easier, and little by little they drop out of the very conversations that keep them connected.

That withdrawal is not harmless. Isolation in older adults is tied to loneliness and low mood. But this is one of the more fixable causes of it. A hearing check, and help if it is needed, can bring someone back into the room, back into the jokes, back to the table they used to run.

Have you noticed someone in your family going quiet lately? Tell us about them. 💛

Here is a surprise almost nobody warns new hearing aid wearers about: for the first while, your own voice can sound loud, boomy, or hollow, like you are talking inside a barrel. It even has a name, the occlusion effect, and it happens because your voice gets trapped in a newly plugged ear instead of escaping the way it used to.

The important part: this is normal, and it is fixable. Your brain adapts as you wear them, and a good fitting can open up the ear so your voice sounds like you again. Wearing them daily actually speeds this up. So if your voice sounds strange, do not quietly give up on the aids. Tell your fitter. That is exactly the kind of thing an adjustment solves.

If you wear hearing aids, do you remember how your own voice sounded at first? What helped? 🎧

Construction and welding work means living inside noise: grinders, jackhammers, impact drills, metal on metal. Those levels can harm hearing in minutes without protection, and because the loss builds up slowly over years, most workers never notice the day it started.

The early signs are easy to brush aside. Ringing after a shift. Turning the TV up at home. Needing to see a kasama's face to understand them. Hearing protection helps, but only when it is worn fully and every time, not hanging around the neck. And a baseline test now, with a yearly check after, means you catch any change while you can still do something about it.

Tag a worker in your family who should protect their ears on-site. 👷

When someone we love has both dementia and hearing loss, the two problems hide each other. The family assumes the confusion is all memory, when part of it is simply that the words never arrived clearly. You cannot reverse dementia. But hearing is the piece you can often fix, and fixing it can bring back real moments of connection.

Small changes help more than you would expect. Face them when you speak. Turn off the background noise. Say one idea at a time, and if they do not catch it, rephrase rather than just repeating it louder. And make sure their hearing aids, if they have them, are clean, charged, and actually in their ears.

If you are caring for a parent or grandparent like this, what is the hardest part for you? You are not alone in it. 💛

Summer and beach trips are the hardest season on hearing aids, and most people never see the damage coming. Sand works its way into the smallest ports. Salt from sea spray and sweat dries into a residue that corrodes the contacts. Heat from a parked car or direct sun warps the casing.

None of that means you leave your aids at home. It means a little care. Wipe them down after the beach, keep them out of the sun, dry them overnight, and always take them off before you swim, even the water-resistant ones. A great day out should not cost you your hearing aids.

Planning a beach trip soon? What is your biggest worry about bringing your hearing aids along? 🏖️

Every rainy season, the same thing: stuffy nose, then clogged ears. They are not two separate problems. Your nose and ears share a drainage tube, and when allergies swell your nasal passages, that tube blocks too. The result is fullness, popping, and that muffled, far-away sound.
Usually, getting the allergy under control opens the ear back up. But if the fullness lingers after the flare passes, or your hearing actually drops, that is the signal to have it looked at rather than wait for next season.
Does your hearing change when your allergies act up? Tell us below. 🌧️

Thousands of miles away, the silence on video calls with parents isn't just awkward—it's a sign. Their hearing loss is slow, but your distance offers a clearer view. You can help orchestrate medical intervention from afar, but first, address the pride. Frame the hearing check as your need to connect, not their failing ears. This simple script shift turns defense into an act of love.

Jeepney and tricycle drivers spend their whole shift inside engine noise and horns. Year after year, that takes a real toll on hearing, and because it happens so slowly, most drivers never notice the day it started.
The early signs are easy to brush off: ringing after a shift, needing the radio louder, missing the passenger calling "para." Simple filtered earplugs cut the harmful part of road noise while still letting you hear what you need to drive safely. Your hearing is part of how you earn. It is worth protecting like your engine.
Tag a driver in your family who should see this. 🚐
