The ultimate intersection of art, ethics and natural science...

Named with a nod to the Dutch adventurer Abel Tasman, the first European to discover New Zealand in 1642. Abel was founded in Amsterdam by New Zealander Frances Shoemack with a simple goal - to create the world’s best natural perfume. Most packaging outlives the fragrance inside it by centuries. Ours doesn’t.

When we set about redesigning our packaging, first and foremost for us was carefully treading the line of lowest impact, most luxurious. Our goal was to use materials from nature, that could return to nature, but that had a tactility about them, a weight and a warmth that plastic never quite manages. Like with our fragrances, this wasn’t about simple, unsophisticated solutions, it was about leaning into the latest technology to achieve this.

This is our cap after 24 weeks back in the ground.

Made from Vivomer, grown through fermentation from agricultural waste rather than drawn from oil. Once it’s returned to soil, the same microorganisms that made it treat it as food, not waste, and break it down.

Returning to nature, literally.

What better way to launch our new toasted milky vanilla, than with a garden party with friends. Double Scoop ice cream by Chef Ellie Bouhadana served in glass objects by Helle Mardahl, the Carmen Guesthouse garden - the perfect location.

An Amsterdam garden party celebration for Double Scoop

Photos from Abel Fragrance's post 24/06/2026

To celebrate the launch of Double Scoop, we brought together collaborators whose instincts we trust, and whose work we adore.
Ellie Bouhadana, Melbourne chef and the kind of creative who makes a room feel alive, translated Double Scoop into an edible delight - a burnt honey, wild rosemary and toasted sesame ice cream. Savoury, sweet, deeply considered, just like the fragrance that inspired it. Every scoop landed in a Helle Mardahl coupe. A glass universe that sits somewhere between nostalgia and fantasy. Richly coloured forms that feel too good to use and too beautiful not to. Set to the backdrop of the Carmen guesthouse garden and a sole cello, the whole evening was deliberately, beautifully unhurried. A befitting evening to debut this quietly indulgent, grown up vanilla.
