Your mouth is part of your body — and the health of your gums matters beyond your smile. 🦷❤️

Research shows a strong association between periodontitis, the form of gum disease that damages the tissues and bone supporting your teeth, and cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes.

How are they connected? Bacteria from inflamed gums can enter the bloodstream, and ongoing gum inflammation can contribute to inflammation elsewhere in the body.

This doesn’t mean gum disease will automatically cause heart disease, or that treating it guarantees prevention. But it does mean your gum health deserves attention as part of looking after your overall health.

Bleeding gums are common, but they shouldn’t be ignored. Brushing twice daily, cleaning between your teeth and having regular gum health assessments can help you keep your gums healthy.

At Headspace Clinic in Warkworth, we look beyond how your teeth look — we assess your gum health and explain what it means for you.

When did you last have your gum health checked?

Why does tartar always seem to build up behind your bottom front teeth?

If you’ve noticed this, you’re certainly not alone! Behind the lower front teeth—and on the cheek side of the upper back teeth—are common spots for calculus, also known as tartar.

The reason? These areas sit close to the openings where saliva enters your mouth.

Saliva helps protect your teeth, but it also contains minerals such as calcium and phosphate. When soft plaque is left on your teeth, these minerals can harden it into calculus.

These spots can also be tricky to clean thoroughly, and some people naturally develop build-up faster than others.

🪥 Brushing carefully along the gumline and cleaning between your teeth daily helps remove plaque before it hardens. Once it becomes calculus, though, your toothbrush can’t remove it—that’s where your hygienist comes in!

The pink and purple colouring in the photos is disclosing dye, which highlights plaque and helps us show you where to focus your cleaning.

At Headspace Clinic in Warkworth, we gently remove build-up and help you find a home-care routine that works for you. No judgement—just healthier teeth and gums. 💛

This before-and-after shows the difference a professional dental hygiene appointment can make, removing plaque and staining to leave the teeth looking cleaner, fresher and brighter.

Regular hygiene appointments can help keep your smile healthy and feeling fresh, especially as we get older.
