Massage can offer a range of benefits, but it’s important to keep those benefits realistic and evidence-based.

The effects of massage are not simply about “loosening tight muscles” or physically changing tissue. A lot of what we experience during and after massage is influenced by the nervous system, sensory input, relaxation, expectations and the way the brain interprets pain and movement.

Massage can be a useful tool for pain management, recovery and general wellbeing but it isn’t a cure-all.

For everyday muscle tension associated with things like prolonged postures, work demands or stress, massage alone may be enough to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed.

For ongoing pain or injury management, however, it often works best as part of a bigger picture alongside appropriate movement, exercise, rehabilitation and other healthcare when needed.

Every treatment is tailored to the individual, their goals and what is most appropriate on the day.

Massage backed by evidence.

Ever wondered what these are? đź‘€

These are myofascial cups, and I sometimes use them as an add-on during treatment when I feel they may be useful.

Unlike traditional massage, which applies pressure into the tissues, cupping uses negative pressure to gently lift the skin and underlying tissues.

Cupping may help:
- Temporarily reduce pain and feelings of muscle tension
- Improve short-term range of motion
- Make movement feel more comfortable
- Provide a different sensory input to the nervous system

The marks that can sometimes appear after cupping are caused by changes in the small blood vessels under the skin, they aren’t toxins being “pulled out” of the body.

Cupping isn’t something every treatment needs, but it can be another tool I use alongside massage and other techniques depending on your goals and what I find during your appointment.
