Award Winning producers of Fermented Foods in NZ. All our ferments are made in small batches, from local spray free produce.

Our products are traditionally fermented with salt using the natural yeasts and bacteria. Fermenting foods is a practice as old as humans themselves. Before modern food production every household would practice fermentation as a way of preserving the harvest and keeping food over non-productive winter months. All over the world traditional cultures innately knew how to improve food with the use of invisible microbes. Science is only just catching up with the innate wisdom of our ancestors. Marea first shared her passion for growing nutrient dense food, making great ferments and nourishing our families to health and wellness, through teaching others. Now you can also buy our GoodBugs online, at local markets or at selected stockists. Goodbugs a name which tells a huge story. Our microbiome contains more bacteria than all of our human cells. A harmonious balance between the different types of bacteria in our microbiome will determine the state of our health. Until recently, the roles of these 'billions of little helpers' that make up our microbiome was a vital, but underrated contributor to human health. Each jar of Goodbugs Zuurkool real sauerkraut is raw (unpasteurised) and alive with these life giving probiotics.

🥗 Hot or Cold — This Salad Does It All!

Daylight savings is this weekend, which means summer is officially on the way! 🌞

Longer days call for fresh, colourful salads — and a generous spoonful of GoodBugs, of course.

Try this delicious Orange, Feta & Purple Zuurkool Salad. It’s fresh and vibrant when served cold, or you can warm it up for a cosy twist.

Ingredients:
• GoodBugs Purple Zuurkool Sauerkraut
• 4 oranges
• 1/2 a cucumber
• 1/2 block of creamy feta
• 1/2 tub of Greek yogurt & cucumber dip
• Mint & nasturtium to garnish

Method:

Slice the oranges into segments and arrange them as the bottom layer of your bowl.

Crumble half a block of feta over the oranges.

Slice the cucumber into half-moons and edge the bowl with them.

Add a generous heap of Purple Zuurkool Sauerkraut on top of the feta and oranges.

Finish with a dollop of Greek yogurt dip and garnish with fresh mint and nasturtium.

✨ Voila! A crisp, tangy, refreshing salad perfect for lunch or dinner.

🔥 Want it warm?
Pop the orange, feta, and sauerkraut layers into the oven for 20 minutes at 180°C. Add the cucumber and garnishes after heating — and enjoy a cosy, comforting variation!

UPDATE TO THE PLAN FOR SUNDAY...

Unfortunately the Maungawhau Market opening has again been thwarted due to expected high winds. So instead, you will find Daniel at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market. He may not be in the usual place, so have a look around (thank you for taking us at such short notice).

Markets this weekend....

Saturday 26 Sept
Cambridge Farmers' Market NZ (Marea)
Parnell Farmers' Market (Daniel)

Sunday 27 Sept
Hamilton Farmers' Market (Marea)
Maungawhau Market (Daniel)

It was a bit of a false start to the Maungawhau Market last weekend, with high winds forcing it to be cancelled at last minute. Fingers crossed that this weekend we do better 🤞

Looking forward to seeing you all!!!!

You might be surprised to hear me say that fermented foods aren't for everyone - but the reality is that sometimes they just don't agree with you! Some people need to focus on building on their gut health BEFORE they can try fermented foods.

We love talking about gut health - get in touch to talk to us about how our fermented foods can work for you!

We’ve got LOTS of sauerkraut juice at the moment! 💚

Use that tangy juice in the bottom of your kraut jar for a probiotic boost or buy a whole bottle.

🥗 Salad dressings
🍋 Instead of vinegar or lemon juice
🥣 Soups & sauces
🥬 Starting another ferment
👶 Some of our customers add a little to baby's purees
🗣️ And after hours of talking at markets, I love a swig for a dry throat!

Cheeky Fact: Sauerkraut brine has long been used as a traditional 'morning-after' the night before pick me up. 😉

So, if you’ve ever wondered what to do with sauerkraut juice, don’t pour it down the sink!

We’ve got plenty right now — and we’re writing a blog about all the different ways you can use it.

Sauerkraut: Don’t underestimate the juice!
