We’re sometimes asked why products like the ICx and IMx don’t offer swapping on every insert. While technically possible, we intentionally chose not to implement universal swapping for several important reasons.

Full swap functionality would require many additional relays, resulting in longer signal paths, more PCB traces, greater complexity, and increased risk of noise and crosstalk. With features like parallel processing and Mid/Side, universal swapping also becomes significantly more complex. It would also make our otherwise intuitive workflow more complex and less straightforward.

Our priority is keeping the signal path as short, clean, and transparent as possible. Adding this level of switching would compromise that philosophy.

But perhaps the most important question is: do you actually need it? In practice, probably not..

Universal insert swapping may sound attractive, but analog chains don’t always behave predictably. The interaction between processors can make one signal-chain order sound fantastic, while reversing them can completely ruin the result. Changing the order isn’t automatically better, it can just as easily work against your goal.

The swap and pre/post options we already provide, combined with the console’s other routing flexibility, offer more practical possibilities than most engineers will realistically need.

And in reality, universal swapping is rarely necessary. Analog gear interacts differently depending on signal order — sometimes changing the order improves things, sometimes it completely destroys the sound. So why would you add the possibility to swap in the first place?
