HIV & AIDS – Complete Educational Explanation
What is HIV?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, especially CD4 (T-helper) cells, which are responsible for protecting the body against infections.
• HIV weakens the immune defense
• Without treatment, the body becomes unable to fight infections and diseases
⸻
What is AIDS?
AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is the advanced and final stage of HIV infection.
A person is said to have AIDS when:
• CD4 cell count falls below 200 cells/mm³, OR
• Serious opportunistic infections or cancers develop
⚠️ Important:
Not everyone with HIV develops AIDS — early diagnosis and treatment can prevent it completely.
⸻
Stages of HIV Infection & Symptoms
1. Acute HIV Infection
⏱️ 2–6 weeks after exposure
This is the early stage with a high amount of virus in the blood.
Common symptoms:
• Fever
• Sore throat
• Skin rash
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Headache
• Muscle and joint pain
• Fatigue
👉 Often mistaken for flu or viral fever
⸻
2. Chronic HIV Infection (Clinical Latency Stage)
• Virus remains active at low levels
• Person may look and feel healthy
• Can last many years with treatment
Possible signs:
• Mild fatigue
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Recurrent mild infections
⚠️ HIV is still transmissible during this stage
⸻
3. AIDS (Advanced Stage)
Severe immune system damage
Symptoms & signs include:
• Extreme weight loss
• Chronic diarrhea
• Persistent fever
• Night sweats
• Oral thrush
• Tuberculosis
• Pneumonia
• Skin cancers (Kaposi’s sarcoma)
• Repeated severe infections
⸻
Causes & Transmission of HIV
HIV spreads through specific body fluids:
• Blood
• Semen
• Vaginal fluids
• Re**al fluids
• Breast milk
Main modes of transmission
• Unprotected sexual in*******se
• Sharing needles or syringes
• Unsafe blood transfusion (rare today)
• Mother to child (pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding)
• Needle-stick injury (healthcare workers)
🚫 HIV does NOT spread by
• Touching, hugging, kissing
• Sharing food or utensils
• Coughing or sneezing
• Mosquito bites
⸻
Why HIV Cases Are Increasing
1. Poor awareness and education
2. Unsafe sexual practices
3. Social stigma and fear of testing
4. Late diagnosis
5. Limited access to healthcare
6. Drug abuse and needle sharing
7. Population movement and migration
8. Myths and misinformation
9. Irregular condom use
10. Poor treatment adherence
⸻
How to Protect Yourself from HIV
1. Safe Sexual Practices
• Use condoms correctly every time
• Limit number of sexual partners
• Get tested regularly
⸻
2. Medical Prevention
• PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) for high-risk individuals
• PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) within 72 hours of exposure
⸻
3. Avoid Blood Exposure
• Never share needles
• Use sterile medical equipment
• Ensure screened blood transfusions
⸻
4. Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission
• HIV testing during pregnancy
• Antiretroviral therapy (ART)
• Safe delivery and feeding practices
⸻
Treatment of HIV
There is no cure, but Antiretroviral Therapy (ART):
• Controls viral replication
• Prevents progression to AIDS
• Allows near-normal life expectancy
• Reduces transmission risk
U = U
Undetectable = Untransmittable
People on effective ART do not transmit HIV sexually
⸻

What's in the Lymphatic System?
Organs and tissues that are part of the lymphatic system include:
bone marrow, the thick, spongy kind of jelly inside bones that makes many kinds of blood cells, including immune system cells
thymus gland, which makes immune system cells called T cells, especially before and during puberty
tonsils appendix lymph nodes
Lymph nodes are small clumps of tissue along the network of lymph vessels that clean lymph as it moves through them. They filter out viruses, bacteria, and fungi that can cause illnesses.
Most lymph nodes are in clusters in the neck, armpit, and groin area. They're also found along the lymphatic pathways in the chest, abdomen, and pelvis, where they filter blood. Inside the lymph nodes, T-cells and another type of lymphocyte, B-cells, help the body fight infection. B cells make antibodies — special proteins that stop infections from spreading by trapping disease-causing germs and destroying them.
When someone has an infection, germs collect in the lymph nodes.
