· Timing & Regrowth: Retouch when roots are ¼ to ½ inch long (about 2–4 weeks for fast growers, 6–8 for slow). Don't wait too long or the "banding" effect gets harder to match.
· Color Matching: For DIY, always buy the same brand and shade as your previous box. For grays, choose a shade one level lighter than your natural color—it blends better and looks softer.
· Product Choice: Use permanent dye for gray coverage or dark-to-light lifts. Use demi-permanent for toning or refreshing faded ends (it's gentler).
· Application Strategy: Apply color only to the regrowth (roots)—never drag it through the mid-lengths and ends repeatedly. Save the last 5–10 minutes to pull it through the ends for a fresh gloss.
· Sensitivity Check: Do a patch test 48 hours before, even if you've used it before—allergies can develop suddenly.
· Post-Care: Wait 48–72 hours before shampooing after the retouch to let the cuticle seal. Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and wash in cool water to prevent fading.
